Crabgrass Questions

Hi,

We have a small cottage in a gated community Southern ME; the community is open May 1st to October 31st.

We installed approximately 2000 sq ft KBG sod 2 years ago.

Last summer and fall the lawn seemed pretty healthy with a few sprigs of crabgrass and little to no weeds.

I fertilized once a month with Milorganite at the bag rate.

My first opportunity this year to apply a pre-emergent was May 5th and I applied Scott's Halts at the bag rate; along with Mag I cal fast acting lime. The lawn looked much like it did last fall.

This past week-end I went up to mow the lawn and it had grown quite a bit; but it had several sprigs of crabgrass.

What can I do to get rid of the crabgrass?

Can I spot spray with a weed killer?

Did I apply the pre-emergent to late?

Thanks

Are you sure it's crabgrass? I think it's often mistaken, this time of year, for something like orchard grass or other similar ones. CG needs consistent soil temps over 55 and with the cool spring we've had I doubt you're seeing it already. I'm in MA, you in ME, prob close to the same schedule.

I agree with PSU's skepticism. Could you post a picture of the offending grass? The best pictures are taken on cloudy or overcast days. Get up and close at a foot from the grass. If you can find a seed head that will help.

You know, most of those grasses will succumb to Tenacity. I don't want to sound like a Syngenta rep but it's true. I've even taken down Quackgrass even though it's not labeled to control it.

    Thanks,

    I will take pictures.

If it is "orchard grass or other similar ones" how do I get rid of it?

Will a broadleaf weed killer do the trick?

I'm currently painting all my trouble weeds with a 2:1:5 glysophate, surfactant, water mix with a dash of a marker in it. This makes a non selective herbicide, selective :)

    way out of may league.

can you recommend any over the counter remedies?

Without knowing what weed we are talking about it's tough. If painting weeds with gly is out of your league than you might be stuck. Most of these trouble weeds are trouble because nothing otc kills them or if there is something out there it's super pricey and super touchy...... professional use stuff and even then it's not gauranteed

    Hi,

I Googled glysophate and found the following.

    pmep.cce.cornell.edu › ... › Dienochlor to Glyphosate

    1. Cached
    2. Similar

Trade names for products containing glyphosate include Roundup, Rodeo, and Pondmaster. It may be used in formulations with other herbicides.

Do you think Roundup for Lawns would work?

    Roundup for Lawns Active Ingredients

0.257% MCPA, dimethylamine salt, 0.118% Quinclorac, 0.029% Dicamba, dimethylamine salt, 0.015% Sulfentrazone

By glyphosate, he's talking RoundUp. Just get a spray bottle of ready-to-use RoundUp and be selective about only applying it to the offending weeds.

I should have been more specific - apologies. Glysophate is the AI in traditional round up (round up for lawns is completely different and is similar to WBG). With Round Up possibly meaning different things to different people, referring to glysophate is just easier. So if you can find round up (i have a 2.5 gallon jug of concentrate) then my above "painting" could be a possibility for you unless you have an infestation.

If it is crabgrass and there are not too many pull them out and they will not come back. Just make sure you get all of the leaves down to the roots below surface though.
