Removing paneling

We just bought a house and the lower bed and half bath have drywall on the upper half of the walls and paneling on the lower half. I took the cover off an outlet and it looks to me like there is drywall behind the paneling, which makes sense, why would you only drywall the top half of the wall? Seems more work than putting up full drywall and paneling over the lower half.

My question is, can I just pull the paneling off, fill any nail holes and paint or will I have to do some prep to the drywall?

Thanks!
