Citrus trees need to have their roots on the dry side between soakings. My citrus trees will do fine in soil dry enough to wreck havoc on a sweet pepper plant but will die in soil just moist enough to grow lambs quarters nicely. By using a 5-1-1 porous mix the soil can be moist while provide adequate oxygen in the soil needed to fight root rot and aerate the roots to be healthy. Sweet potato plants with thrive in soil that is dry enough to kill any citrus tree. Drought tolerant is plant specific.

My soil is heavy enough to go a week in the summer without watering and in the winter I pull fresh air through the root with a vacuum cleaner and a vacuum chamber the tree sits on.
