I would suggest finding an "inspiration" piece, which you can build the room around. Look for a blanket or artwork or a rug that you both love, and then build the room around that. Things will more easily fall into place when you have a meaningful piece to start with; choose paint color last.

If you need some inspiration, I would check out Land of Nod.....some of the nursery ideas seem to be your style.

A baby needs a crib, a dresser with a changing tray on top, a rocking chair for his parents or grandparents to rock him in, curtains or room-darkening shades depending upon which way his window(s) face and how much light comes in, and a small night light. Mommy and Daddy need the rocker to be comfortable, the crib to have two positions for the mattress (high position while the baby doesn't move around much, and a low position when the little guy can pull himself up), easy access to diapers and clothes while the baby is on the changing pad, and just enough light to peek in and check on him. You may want to add a mobile over the crib and some cute wallpaper on a wall, even an extra upholstered chair. You will need somewhere to stow toys, such as some sturdy baskets on the floor. The dresser and any tallish piece of furniture need to be bolted to the wall so they won't be tipped if the baby pulls himself up on it or tries to climb on it, or you live where earthquakes have ever happened. The decorating and painting will be for you...he won't care for a long time.

Yes, it's 144 inches. There are no doors in the 144 inches sides. The far left door is to go to living room, the far right door is to go to bathroom which then connects to a walking closet.

A rocking chair does not honestly soothe all babies so I wouldn't fret about that, you do need somewhere to feed the baby, a newborn needs to be fed about every hour or two (sometimes a bit longer) around the clock. You can build a changing station onto a dresser or desk or table as long as it's sturdy, newborns go through something like 10 diaper changes per day. A picture over the changing area can be nice for something to look at while they are getting changed. A nightlight can be useful as you may have to make many night time visits to the baby, plus kids usually want one when they get a bit older. I'm not sure if there's room for toy storage or a book shelf but they can be nice to have. You have a nice start with grey and copper, a soft blue grey might be nice, although your choices are wide open, green, orange, brown... Be very careful with the blinds, the crib should be nowhere near the blind cord (a strangulation risk) and every piece of furniture should be secured to the wall (I think someone mentioned that). The parents should be able to reach into the crib to get the baby out and the bottom of the crib should be sturdy enough that a heavy kid can't knock the bottom out (I went with a metal frame for peace of mind), my kid ended up sleeping in his crib until he was nearly 4. Babies adjust their sleep to whatever their normal circumstances are (noisy, light etc)

I am trying not to paint the wall. We want to stick to white, grays and maybe light brown. Would you buy the crib in white or light gray? Would white crib and white walls be too much white?

Is your rug staying???? The color of the rug will be able to tone the white walls down from the natural light

Hey Claire, yes thats the floor carpeting. Cannot remove it. I could add a small carpet with different colors in there if its recommended.

For me personally that's too much allergens going on for a babies room. I wouldn't recommend it.

First of all congratulations! Secondly, if you were thinking about crib bedding or blankets, or pillows for the baby we have a variety of options that would be suitable.

Keep it simple, keep it safe and add a single bed in the nursery for those inevitable nights when one parent needs a baby break in the big mom & dad bed all to themselves! Congratulations and best of luck.

Since the rocking chair is grey, I'd highly suggest getting the Heather Grey crib. Idk if you already have a particular crib in mind but I think it's such a gorgeous color for the crib. Very classy and the 4 in 1 convertible one I'd recommend. I can't really tell, but I think white/off white walls are always the way to go. It opens the room tremendously and even though it looks as if you have a good amount of light cuz of the windows. It would look amazing with what I see. You're going to have that room fill up fast asa baby boy comes and the white/off white walls would really help having the room look more spacious seeing you won't ever have enough space with a little one! :)

If you do plan on adding a piece of furniture for those restless nights you want to sleep in there, I wouldn't get a twin bed, I'd go with a comfortable love seat, couch, or even a nice cot. It's def not a nessecity. I'd know seeing my baby boy just turned 4 months on the 9th and I also have a 9yr old boy. JS... I have some experience. And I have white walls with the Heather Grey crib, and I couldn't be more happy with my choice. I was going to get the crib in white, in fact that's what it was listed on my registry as. After some more thinking and countless hours looking at pics of them both side by side, the Heather Grey just looks really classy. I saw a crib in a pic above that was white and grey and it's very beautiful as well. I just like the whole 4 in 1 convertible cribs so I won't have to buy a twin bed when he's ready for it. As for wall decals, I'd say yes but for my own personal taste I'd either do something like the grey/white polka dots shown in a pic above or just doing a border and some simple decals around the room. Simplicity is key to me with nurserys, because the room is going to fill up with SO much stuff from the second he's born from then on! Lol.
