I don't mind it. Has basic proportions and nice rolled arms....

Guess we need to see photos of the rest... how large of an area... could be that even though the rug has dark tones, the table might not be ideal... could stain/ chalk paint a tone like railing.

Yes, a photo of the room from another direction might help those here to better consider a different placement that you may not have though of for the couch. It's a nice couch, just need to get it in the right spot of possible.

What room is this (living, I'm assuming)? What is the dimension from the half wall to the other side of the room? Would you consider having the sofa FACE the stairs and have the back of the sofa line up with the edge of the half wall. Put a sofa table behind the sofa...IF there is enough room for traffic to get across the room around the sofa to the kitchen. Was the design help in the store where you bought the sofa? It's a great sofa but I'll bet whomever helped didn't see where it was going.

I like Carol's suggestion of the sofa facing the stairs...if it would work.

If I put the Sofa facing the stairs then the first thing someone sees when entering the house is the back of the couch. Not too welcoming
Also I did have the in store design person cone to the house twice so she knew the layout.

If you put a sofa table at the back of the sofa that will take care of the "first thing they see will be back of sofa" problem. Good luck!

Why do you have a sofa here anyway? This doesn't look like a living area; it looks like a foyer. Get another chair like the one you have and put one chair in front of the stair, the other in front of the half wall with a table between. Move the sofa to another room or send it back.

Where did your design person suggest that the sofa be placed? How will the room be used (how many people seated)? I assume you asked for a 3 seater.

Your room is small, with little useable wall space. The sofa is a fairly compact one and suits the room. Hard to find a much smaller 3 seater.

Is there going to be a TV or other furniture already purchased, for this room? Sofa side or coffee tables?

If you don't like the idea of open wall above the sofa in any position, you could put a decorative screen behind the sofa. Moving the sofa away from the wall is a good idea especially in the second photo, to leave room in front of the air vent.

Since it is a living room, I'd keep the 3 seater. It is unlikely you'll find a much smaller 3 seater, and I'm not a fan of love seats.

Is there room to float it, facing the fireplace, that is, pulled out from the half wall? Maybe even with the table behind it... not sure about that. The round coffee table wouldn't be used. Set the ottoman up next to the fireplace at an angle.

It's a lovely sofa. Perhaps because it's new to your eyes and a light color makes you think it's too bulky...add some more light colored things around the room so it doesn't stand out so much by itself...like a light colored pillow or throw on your chair and some light colored accessories etc.

Even though the sofa is a bit bigger than the pass-through wall, in my opening I think it look the best there!!

Have you said if sofa seating with fireplace, etc...suits your needs for a sitting room? or it was an experiment entirely...

I think it would be perfect if you leave the couch as posted:

couch down a tad so it doesn't exceed end of that wall above.

If you are willing to part with the gold tone chair and get a armless slipper chair or similar it would be perfect IMO.. however, the dog stays!

Not certain the table at the end belongs there... the center table can serve well for beverages and a smaller scale armless chair would tie in better...
