Hello Rio Brewster, I would definitely choose the black windows with a door in the tone of the wood posts. I would suggest to pay special attention to the door design I think you need a door as in the photoes below. An about the garrage door. I would rather make them in the wood tone too. I like the black windows with the wood front door.

Black windows are the best choice. Very daring approach and you can do the front door to coordinate with your interior design choices. If you want a farmhouse look, do the front door in wood/barndoor look with hex etc, not those long thin windows; and then do the garage doors in wood as well, cedar stained med wood tone as in natural cedar. Absolutely, do NOT do black windows and white trim. Not a good look.

Something like this style and shape would work well with your home. Match garage doors to this as well. Find good door supplier in your area and they should have tons of options available. Simple side lights to go with this style and you have it.

You get some light in through the upper windows of the door and some from sidelights.

Thanks. I wanted the black but was second guessing myself. I'm really trying to go more contemporary. I keep coming back to the door with the three horizontal lites. Like this one.

Don't know if we can swing cedar garage doors. We're already stretching on fiberglass windows.

There are "look-a-like" garage doors that simulate wood that would be better than black. Also, this is not a contemporary home in any way. I think mixing styles this dramatically will give you a very mixed up look that you won't like. But, maybe I'm missing something. Where is this home located? In a planned community, on larger property? A one story ranch look? If you want contemporary then I would suggest horizontal planks and then the horizontal windows on the front door could make some sense. Rethink the red and go with a dark gray with some accents in rust/oranges and some linear fencing and linear lines to the garage doors with linear window lines. Let me find a photo to explain. bbl

This combination would be closer to what you might be looking for. You can still use the black windows, but gray body and garage doors, with linear wood fencing.

Those are mid century modern homes, but they kind of work with your one story look, just giving the "curb appeal" color combos that might work better for you than red, which definitely takes you to country.

Black windows...because they won't "yellow" and give more "presence" to the home. Wood door for front...fake wood door for garage. NICE looking home.

It's in Texas on 2.5 acres on a lot with a lot of big trees. I originally wanted something Eichler-ish, but couldn't get buy-in from DH. Making the whole house dark in TX is not a good idea. I'm pushing it with windows as it is.

I'm in Texas too, south of Houston, but I can't get past the red. Is that a done deal? I think the vertical would be less "barn like" if it was some other color. that red, just says "barn" to me. Could you do a gray with your black windows and black trim? Then you could do a black front door with your horizontal windows. That could work. Sounds like a great property and big trees sounds like you might be on my side of the state? Lower Rio valley maybe?

Light gray with some wood looks and medium gray trim. I would also consider bringing your roof line out another few feet if possible. It would really help with Texas sun protection and give you a bit of "porch" area.

Even lighter gray with some metal roofing and black and browns.

It's Dripping Springs - West of Weird. It's hard to tell from the elevations but we do have an 8' porch going all the way across the front.

Red is not a done deal, but I'm not a fan of gray at all. Blue is a possibility. The red just really speaks to me for some reason. Either way, I think the black windows are the way to go.

Agree on black windows. If you do blue it needs to be deep blue to handle black windows. Then wood look for contrast. The blue would lean more toward modern/contemporary styling. It is quite easy to "like" many looks and elements. What is hard is sticking to a style perspective so in the end you have the overall look you want.

So happy I went with my gut on the black and red. I also ended up going with a very traditional wood door. I wouldn't change anything. We are in a more rural area - or at least we were when we started. Way too much development happening out here.

Just don’t add words to your decor....we see words like “home” or “family” used as art. It’s a bit corny.

Rio, glad to hear you are so happy with it! Red is a bit risky in my opinion so I am worried I will regret it. White is still on the table as well. I think we want black windows regardless.

I don't know where you are building, but I see a lot of white modern farmhouses out here in central Texas.

White with black windows is definitely a Thing. Personally I wanted to stand out - but not everyone wants that.

Let me know what you decide. If you read the thread, I knew I wanted red, in spite of what the professionals said.

I always say, take samples of the colors and take them out to the site. Whether indoors or out, when you see them in context of the surrounding area, your gut will tell you what to do. For me it confirmed what I wanted all along.

And thank you Flo - if you are out there. You were nice even though we didn't agree - and having to defend my choice helped me know it was right for me.

As for decorative words, we have a small plaque with the verse Joshua 24:15 hanging over the kitchen door. It is subtle and meaningful to us - and a helpful reminder as we leave every day.
