Yes it would have to be sealed and pimed and a few coats of Acrylic paint and sealed or glazed over again. Just thought about a beautiful bloom in a uniquely painted pot. It would make an appeal. It would be the talking piece in any garden.

Found another awesome way of decorating terracotta pots beyound painting. Actually by applying fabric and seal.

Directions:

1. Spray paint the clay flower pots. I applied two coats of spray paint to each flower pot. I allowed them to dry completely overnight.

2. Determine the amount of fabric you need to cover the flower pot. I wrapped the fabric around the flower pot, then cut off the access.

3. Apply Mod Podge Outdoor Exterior right under the crease of the flower pot. *Note: Since these flower pots will be outside you must use the Mod Podge Outdoor Exterior to prevent the fabric from weathering.

4. Attach the fabric to the flower pot under the crease. It tends to slide as you pull it around the flower pot, so make sure you hold it in place to stick for a few seconds.

5. Then, as I went around the flower pot I cut a slit in the fabric about 3/4 of the way up towards the crease. That made it easier to straighten. Then I applied the Mod Podge Outdoor Exterior where it was needed while aligning, and smoothing out the fabric. I did this all the way around the flower pot.

6. Lastly, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge Outdoor Exterior on the fabric, and allow it to dry.

I used to be an instructor at Michaels for painting and jewelry. But we also did a lot of crafts with kids. I've done both methods, painting and fabric application, and they both worked great. You may also alternatively apply decorative paper, gift wrap, etc and seal it with waterproof clear coats. Just be sure not to block your drainage holes. Obviously all of these methods last best in shade rather than full sun as they will tend to fade (paints too). Applying a UV protectant spray first before sealing can help with that so they last longer. Though in some cases the faded look is very nice.

Paint markers and fabric paints with 'pen' like applicator tips also work well.

Many years ago, I bought a product from a nursery painting on Terra Cotta pots to seal them. It was like a white wash liquid. The smell reminded me of the White LePages Glue I used for gluing paper &/or papier-mâché, only watered down.

I know people do not like doing this with Terra Cotta Pots, but it does not concern me. Just do not like the white residue left on outside of pots over time. Could clean I guess.

Peter - there is primer paint base for terracotta pots before painting. I have seen it at a nursery, makes the final paint adhere bettter.

I bought this to try and I have a model pot to copy, after I can paint it. Its a flat pot so keeps the Adenium roots flat.

Cool did u have a look at the link i have the undercoat that is suitable its just the marble affect the one i done yesterday turned out great but the paint ran off the pot .

Agartta that's very interesting i have some cornice cement in the shed might give it ago after I finish my first project i will do some pictures if it works.

I picked up some nice big terracotta pots on gumtree, the lady gave me 1 big pot for free as it was cracked. After driving around here and there with the terracotta pots, the cracked one came appart so now I have to learn how to glue it back together. Been reading bout join compound to fix broken terracota. Lucky its only in 3 pieces. I love terracotta pots.

Peter - they are really cool, I like the yellow/orange pots, I think purple and blue would look great too. I started fixing the broken terracotta pot, I need to put more glue tomorrow, then I sand and I want to paint it with Rust-Oleum spray paint. I want to paint them bright gold lol. I will show photos as I progress with them.

Pete - wow I like both colors, they came out looking awesome. I tried to glue my broken terracotta pot by using Locite and silicone glue, I give it time to dry then paint it.

Then I have to fix this super ugly huge stone pot not terracotta. I need to scrub all flaky paint off this one.

Left in the rain and neglected by the old owner.

After I finish fixing them, they will look like this lol

When i glue my cracked pots i use liquid nail then ratchet strap them it clamps the two pieces up tight gold mmm i like them as much as common pick DR :×)

Gold brings luck and makes anything ugly look good lol.

abrahamx - I do like terracotta pots, the ugly big blue one that I will restore is actually made of stone and weight a tan lol. I will use it to plant an apple tree in it.

Agartta, I saw a Martha Stewart video on how to make your pots look aged. They ended up looking just like your "ugly big blue one." So you are already chic! LOL She had another video on how to make algae and moss grow on your pots. Ha! All of mine look like that!

I love the painted pots y'all have posted. I have a friend who paints pots with ceramic paints and then fires them in the kiln. I have not painted any terra cotta pots (and I don't have a kiln!), so I am very interested in what and how.

My speed is more spray paint, painter's tape and plastic pots! LOL They do brighten up my sun deck - and the paint helps protect the plastic pots so they last longer.

Ah - now back to drooling . . .

Oh, I'm with you! I think it is funny to see what others find attractive. I don't care to have algae and moss growing on and in my pots. In fact, I have to bleach the sides of the house to control algae and mildew down here.

my god peter they look great where do you fit the time in to paint pots my spare time is potting adeniums just potted about 200 in squat pots 4 weeks ago and they are now getting buds. I will get photos of them as they are only 8 months old

this is some obsenium, DHA, Bang wang the other ones are in the grow tent and larger ones out side i just repoted them thats what got me motivated i had a heap of ugly terracotta pots wanted to brighten them up they are for my main plants.
