Tile the black area with tile that incorporates some color of your wood

is the mirror removable ?

Getting rid of that sad yellow and re-painting the rooms a new fresh color and removing the window coverings will help you see the fireplace in a whole new light.

Thanks! the mirror is built into the fireplace. We plan to paint the walls white. hoping that helps

Formby's Refinisher for the wood & clean, clean, clean on the rest of it - but there should be tons of stuff on the proper way to restore a historic home like you have. I'm so jealous but happy for you!!!

I love the craftsman style. Just add some color to the fireplace surround with a few accent Motawi tiles or some other arts and crafts tiles. I'm so envious!

I second replacing some of the black with Colorful Craftsman tiles. I can't tell from the picture but the sconces looked too small and didn't look Craftsman. I'd add something chunkier with mica shades.

I think that once you make those changes you might be inspired by the tiles to choose a wall color other than white.

It's screaming for some great handmade tiles where the black is! Something in greens and yellows, maybe? I love it! As far as your white, I'd do a cream instead...white might be too harsh for the rich wood. A nice light cream would really make it, though.

Its a beautiful fireplace. Painting the room white would be an improvement, perhaps something in a cooler shade to contrast all the wood. As for the fireplace simply replacing the black surround around the fireplace with beautiful tiles would do wonders. There are many choices on tiles, in all shapes and colors. Here are a few idea pics.

I would pull up the carpeting, remove those drapes, have a white marble surround and hearth installed. Add some fireplace accessories and possibly look for a couple of sconces that suit the period of the home.
