bosch vs kitchenaid

last modified: 9 years ago

I'm trying to decide between KitchenAid and Bosch for dishwasher and range.

My concern about the Bosch dishwasher is the filter instead of grinder for food shmutz.I've also heard it's hard to load large pots and pans in the Bosch - and I use a large slow cooker at least 2-3 times per month.

That would be the KDFE104DSS vs SHS5AV55UC

I like the look of the KitchenAid slide-in gas range better than the Bosch, but I've seen complaints about the self-clean function and the outside getting very hot.

That's the KSGG700ESS vs HGI8054UC

Thoughts?

I didn't think that KA made dishwashers with grinders any more. In any event, there really is no issue with filters. I just scrape my dishes and very rarely do my filters need cleaning. When they do, it's a few seconds to remove, then rinse and a couple more seconds to replace. Really can't be easier.

As to the self clean function on the KA, my understanding is that Aqua-lift is not self clean. There have been a few threads on this subject, most recently this one.

My last KA dishwasher which was their top of the line model was a piece of garbage. Go with the Bosch. I had a Bosch cooktop and oven in my condo and am building a new house. I'm getting another Bosch cooktop (induction) and oven.

I have thee Kenmore Elite version of the KA KDTM404. I've put greasy meat loaf remnants, pasta scrapings, chopped/cooked onion, rice, and all sorts of stuff. It's all come out clean and no food on bottom of tub. I predominantly use pots & pans with high-temp wash.

I had horrible luck with my kitchenaid stove, it was pretty pricey to buy, and then I was repairing it all of the time. Something went wrong after I had already spent about $1500 in repairs. I called to get an idea of the cost to repair, when I told the rep that I was pretty upset that it was only 6 yrs old and I had spent so much, and now it was broken again, she told me that I should be happy that it lasted for 6 yrs! Never bought anything kitchenaid after that.

My KA dishwasher died after 2-1/2 years. I replaced it with a Miele. Our KA refrigerator has been serviced multiple times. I would never buy any KA appliance again.

I also had numerous problems with a top of the line Kitchenaid dishwasher. Replaced it after about 6 years with a Bosch.

Current house is 11 years old and came with KA appliances. Not a single problem with the dishwasher and gas cooktop. Oven had a thermal fuse replacement (DYI) once and then the whole thing went this year. Had a 13 year old refrigerator with one relay replaced but no other issues. Replaced it with a CD KA fridge and no problems yet but only two years old. Even still, we will go with Bosch in our current build.

You're asking for advice comparing 2 specific models. I can tell you what I despised on my previous Bosch and Kitchenaid appliances and my likes of both. However it's useless knowledge when it comes to both these models.

I doubt anyone has real life experience with both models mentioned. Someone probably will be able to comment on one model or the other, but not both.

I suggest looking at reviews and comparing the reviews. Also look at service after the sale.

I don't have the DW anymore, as we sold the house, but the Bosch we put in replaced a 3-4 year old KA that needed constant service. Loved that Bosch, and plan to put one in our new reno. Very quiet, and totally cleaned the dishes. Sorry I can't replay to specific models.

Go with the Bosch dishwasher. No comparison. The filters can get gunk in them, they are easy to clean in the sink. But if you're getting gunk it's due to detergent usually. A simple brand change fixes that problem. I ran a Bosch for 10 years with zero issues, moved and inherited a 10 year old Kenmore Elite (which was also sold as a Kitchenaid and a Whirlpool Gold) - total piece of garbage in comparison. You have to take apart the entire machine and clean it (with tools, etc. takes forever). I don't think they sell this model anymore, but it is newer than my Bosch and couldn't clean as well. It's also makes more noise.

We have had Bosch dishwasher and kitchen aid slide in oven (electric, glass top) and both of them had issues, but never really needed to be serviced.

We are now building a house and are really on the fence about going all Bosch or All KA! Thoughts? Votes? I’m leaning toward Bosch because of the more European streamline look, but is KA better overall?

People will tell you to not buy a package. People will tell you to go down and test out the appliances to see first-hand if they met your needs. Both are good advice and will share our experience a year after my last post.

We ended up with Bosch gas cooktop, speed/wall oven and dishwasher. We went for a Kitchenaid full depth side-by-side refrigerator because DW wanted the extra capacity and did not want a french door. After using them all for 7 months there has been something about all of them that we do not like.

Dishwasher - Do not like the way dishes are loaded. People either like or do not like this and we are on the later group. Tines are too close for there dishes and some bowls are difficult to load in without taking too much space. The top drawer silverware is a learning process to get things loaded properly. I am sure some of this will improve the more we use and study it. The dishwasher also seemed to develop and oder that happened when we let the rinse agent run out. Not sure about that but it went away and it was not food in the dishwasher causing it. Never had that in the prior KA dishwasher and we liked the way that loaded better.

Gas cooktop - Like everything about it except the knobs are too close together and harder to clean that then prior KA unit we had. Please, no comments about Induction as DW had the choice and she wanted to stay with gas.

Speed/Wall oven - My wife is on the shorter side and she has a hard time reaching into the upper speed/micro unit to talent the back of it. The problem is the door swings down and not to the side so she cannot get close enough to it. The carousel also stops working at times and found out the wheels and drive need to be cleaned very often to keep it working properly. We are extremely clean people so I feel this is a flaw for Bosch. We liked our old KA unit for usability better but not for quality.

Refrigerator - We had a similar unit in our prior home only this one is full depth, recessed into a wall cavity and our prior unit was counter depth. The full depth minimize some of the flaws with the CD by having larger produce drawers and having the additional capacity has been great. The problem we have is KA quality. The condenser fan on the fridge side started making an annoying noise. We contacted Whirpool and they had a local technician quickly contact us. He came out, diagnosed the problem and ordered the part. Turns out the part is not in-stock at Whirlpool and there is not ETA on when it will be back in supply again! A brand new fridge and the manufacturer does not stock the part?

Overall, we liked the day-to-day use of our prior KA products over the Bosch but have a major strike against Whirlpool for reliability and not being able to have the necessary parts to comply with their warranty. When I asked the service technician, who services many different brands, what company he would recommend based on his repair experience, his opinion was the none of the regular consumer line products stood out for quality (they all have issues) but felt Whirlpool was the brand he would favor.

So go look at the Bosch very closely to make sure you can live with their design. They just feel like they are higher quality products based on our own usage (and everyone is different) but the minor inconveniences for us takes away a bit of enjoyment.

    Thanks to Rob!
We agree, whatever you buy there will be learning curves and some issues.
We learned with our Bosch dishwasher, that we had to use a rinse agent, cause if not we’d have food particles on the glassware. Didn’t matter if we cleaned the foodtrap every time. So, we always use a rinse agent
Our KA oven had some issues with even heating and inconsistent temperature control. My husband reread the book and recalibrated and then it was fine.
The worst was the GE side by side fridge (that we spent way too much on)we always had trouble with the water-in-door and ice machine. Then, after 6 years the surround under the opening for water/ice began to corrode.
We left the refrigerator at our old house, along with everything else in the kitchen
We’ve decided to go all Bosch and I’ll post if it was a positive or negative experience

Have KA Fridge and DW from 7 years ago now. No issues with either. Will say that the DW has close tines for the type of dishes (Fiestaware) we have. But Fiestaware is very square so that is not really the fault of the DW. The fridge is a 18cu size, but wide and counter depth. Love that. Hope I am not jinxing us, but so far both are fine. They are simpler models.
