I'm putting in wood clad windows and doors in my new contemporary house, and am planning to stain them. In back I'll have a big folding glass door, and La Cantina is by far the cheapest option. It comes in vertical grain fir, but my preferred windows (Kolbe VistaLuxe) come in pine.

If the windows and doors are stained clear, is there going to be an obvious difference? I'm assuming yes, but to go to a pine door, or VG fir windows, is considerably more expensive. I can change the windows to mixed grain fir for an affordable cost, but I'm not sure that's any better.

Any thoughts on a solution? Or if all-fir or all-pine is better for staining?
