I think a long narrow subway type tile would be nice. But might want to explore some other options, since you have all black appliances? You could do black glass? It could look really stunning.

Black subway tile in this kitchen with black appliances is quite stunning. Good lighting makes a nice difference as well. Are you doing any pendant(s) over your sink or peninsula? I think the black and whites and creams would be really chic.

You don't really need a backsplash. Your kitchen is not expansive, I'd mount a matching piece of stone over the range. You will need to dry-fit the range hood before templating the stone.

Why not try a white subway tile? It might look stunning with your countertop choice.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming. White subway tile definitely looks good. I would like to go with white glass subway tile but don't like that it doesn't always come out looking white once installed.

You have very little area to cover--mini subway or arabesques would be great. As you consider larger subway, think about how many tiles will actually fit.

I'm sure you won't have black appliances forever so I wouldn't double-down with black tile.

Black is out of the picture for sure. So far looks like the misses wants to go flat 3x6" white subway tile and a little design in the middle above the stove top so have see what we can come up with.

In your small space, I urge you to not break up the backsplash with something over the stove. The better look would be a uniform tile with little embellishment and let the granite be the star. Keep it simple. You can put some interesting "bowls or accent pieces" on the peninsula or range top and that is all you need.

I think the stone is beautiful, so I'm a vote for something that (a) gives some contrast with the cabinets (thus no white) and (b) plays up the counter pattern without competing -- the winner is some shade of gray or tan taken from the counter veining.

If you do decide to do "white with a pattern over the cook top," then keep it a white-on-white pattern, which won't fight with the counters but will add a little interest up close.

One more thing, not all "whites" are the same, so you have to bring samples home and see with your cabinet "white". You will find loads of shades and will have to hunt to get the right hue.
