It is not expected that you tile up the column or above the upper cabinets.

It would strictly be a matter of your design and your opinion. Standard backsplash tile would just go up to the bottom of your cabinets and stopping at that same height on the column.

What kind of backsplash? A simple subway tile I do not see going up the column... but If you did a stacked stone or something that could actually be used on a column (even if the kitchen wasn't there) might be a really interesting feature.

I would only tile above the upper cabinets if you had lighting up there to draw your eye to the fun detail. Don't waste material on something that isn't going to be seen.
