I start with an organic potting mix like Fox Farm or Kellogg's and mix it with small course pine nuggets and perlite for drainage, I will usually also add some moo-nure or spanghum peat moss and mix it in a five gallon bucket until it is the consistency I like. Drainage is the key, so make sure to use coarse organic materials liberally when mixing.

I just started potting my hosta this year, and this is a mix I play around with after listening to other pot heads and reading up on some good mixtures. Others here have been potting longer and will probably have slightly different mixtures they use.
