What's the point of getting mahogany doors if you are going to stain them to look like they're a different kind of wood? Yes, mahogany has pink undertones, and those undertones are most visible in raw wood. I would use a "natural" stain, then seal the doors and let them darken over time.

That said, they're your doors, choose whatever you like. Have the company doing the work mock up a few different stains on mahogany wood for you so you can choose more easily.

This is our mahogany door. We did not want to go too dark because we wanted the beauty of the wood to come through. We had our installer stain some sample boards first and chose Minwax Pecan. Mahogany will always look somewhar reddish, but I would not try to hide that. I personally think gray tones would be a huge mistake.

Another vote to embrace what you have chosen with the mahogany. We chose mahogany for our front door - these are during construction and not the best pics but you get the idea. If you want more detail let me know. Don't hide that gorgeous grain with stain - it should be the star. I used General Finishes Enduro-Var which is probably my favorite finish that I've ever used.

Those are really lovely, DLM2000 and sas95! Thanks for the feedback, all. It is indeed a beautiful wood on its own. We chose it for durability and I'll admit it's a bit more red than I'd anticipated. And our house already gets very warm light. I'm leaning now toward a medium or light stain versus dark - I personally think the right stain color could showcase the grain nicely, and might help the door work better with our design scheme. But we have some mahogany pieces to play with, so I'll definitely try out a clear/natural stain as welll!

When we got our Mahogany doors, my now-ex was in his passive aggressive stage. He wanted a dark door, so I went and got different stains. He liked an Olympic something that looked absolutely chocolate. I wish he'd been even snotty and said to me, "You have to wipe stain off." Because that door looked painted for-EVEH.

Fast forward several years with him gone, and me having learned enough to be very dangerous. I absolutely [insert really rude 'f' word here] the Mahogany front door.
I stripped it and sanded it down (before I discovered Citristrip, sadly). I wanted a natural finish. I read and read, and ended up with Cabots Australian Timber Oil, which was supposed to bring out the grain and seal it well.

O. M. G. I still HATE my yellow door. And, oil yellows. So does polyurethane, BTW.

Fast forward again. I learned about Citristrip, which can suck stain right out of the wood. (I'm here to tell you with 15 antique doors as testimony! Raw wood! Digression...) I used it on the sister mahogany side door and it came out a GORGEOUS grayed wood brown. Not gray from stain, but being weathered.

All that said, I'm using some white oak in my kitchen. I have discovered that special walnut doesn't have any red in it, which I really love. A single coat just gives the grain some depth without making it look man-cave-ish. I'm going to try it on the inside of the door I screwed up to see how it could look. I'm going to take the door off when its warmer and see if Citristrip can suck the yellow color out of the other side of the door and start over.

So a lot more info than you might need, but you might want to check out the Minwax Special Walnut. Experiment. But Mahogany, like cherry somewhat, will oxidize and darken, so keep that in mind.

Hello everybody! i just bought a mahogany wood door, and we want to stain a little bit dark but not too much as you mention here... so ... which brand/stain do you recommend to get the color? ... we bought 2 colors from Sherwin W and was a very bad idea there are just like painting with tea.. so we want something as the sas95 picture but maybe a little bit dark, so please can you recommend me the stain and which product should i use to get the finish? i will do it by myself, so please help me! thanks a lot!

Update on my yellow mahogany door.

Last summer, I bought some marine teak brightener and cleaner. I used it on the still chocolate sidelights of my stripped, still-yellow front door. (First picture of the door with the brown stain sanded off front door Still hadn't gotten into the detail.)

The 3rd picture is of the sister door cleaned and scrubbed with this brigtener. I like it and am looking for something to seal it with, that won't yellow.

Now, the sidelites cleaned up very well. I don't know where any of you are getting the red in mahogany, but I'm not. Even the sidelites are a yellow color.

While working on the sidelites, was also busy hating my front door. 9 years later.

I went and got my special walnut, that doesn't have any red in it (who wants orange!?) and gave the door a coat. Well, for the first time, that dumb door doesn't invoke, "God I hate that door" from me. It toned down the yellow, and I think I will be able to deal with it again. I am going to let it weather, unsealed, for a couple years. The sidelites, too, with the teak brightener, are looking more aged than stained.

I pretty much hate my solid mahogany front door.

And it's all my fault.

Yes. It definitely dulled the yellow in the door.

Just stained my mahogany a beautiful deep red. It is gorgeous. No regrets! There’s copper roof above it so it will be fabulous together!
