Need help...plans to 'open' wall...fail

We just bought a house that needs major updating and wanted to open up non-load bearing wall between kitchen and dining room (circled in red)...to make it look like a more updated similar house (photo attached...we can't widen the opening between dining room and sunroom right now b/c it's load bearing). I don't know why this wasn't obvious to contractor before opening the wall, but there's a big metal plumbing pipe in the wall. I don't think we can move it. Can box it in. We were planning on copying the updated photo with the extended L shape counter, enough room for 2 barstools. Now that there is a pipe in the way, I don't know if we should still do it and just do 1 bench-type seat since 2 barstools won't fit anymore, or do something else. Any layout advice is appreciated! Super bummed about that pipe...I feel like it's just going to look really weird.

Am sure the pipe can be moved... for a price.

What does your contractor suggest? Should he have suspected the pipe by what is below or above the space?

If you do not want the small countertop, maybe switch the opening to be the doorway, since it is larger???

However, a small counter and the opening may be better than none.

Might be easier to give suggestions with a floorplan.

Thanks for your response and suggestions! Contractor should have noticed it because the stack is in that exact same location in the basement. But, I think even with that knowledge we would've wanted to open up that wall as much as possible anyway, so I'm not dwelling on that. He only suggested that he could wall it off and make it a column but we didn't ask him about any design ideas yet for how to make the column fit in aesthetically. I like the first photo you posted. I'm going to try and make an easily uploadable floorplan (my friend suggested something called roomstyler 3D) and post for suggestions. Thanks again!

Oh, yea, basement should have been a clue.

I used a free app, Chief Architect Room Planner, that was easy to learn & use.

Try a kitchen designer. They have lots of experience working around plumbing :)
