Here in Texas when the conversation turns to quality peaches the term Fredericksburg Peach immediately comes up. In fact about a week from now I will make the 3 hour drive and pay an exorbitant price for a box of those highly prized Fredericksburg peaches (FP). I have about 30 peach trees but due to unusually low chill hours this past winter I have no production this year. I think one of the things that gives the FP its distinctive taste is its balance of acid/sugar, high on the acid. I have found one variety of peach that replicates that FP taste even where I live, 3 hours east of there. The TexRoyal Peach is one of my favorite varieties. It was released in 1991 by Texas A&M. The chill hours is 600 and ripens early to mid June in my area, Normangee, Texas. As with most things it is not perfect, I do occasionally get a split pit. It is a yellow flesh semi-freestone. Just thought I would pass on my experience with this great tasting peach.
