2017 your first Japanese Beetle

Yesterday strolling amongst the roses I discovered my first Japanese Beetle for 2017 season. It was on Tahitian Sunset. Please post when you see yours, too.

I have only seen a couple because nothing is blooming now to attract them. My son has moved next door and they are eating his green bean leaves. My granddaughter was helping to pick them off and she covered her eyes and said "I am not old enough to see that". She is a precocious 12 and is very funny. You can imagine what it was because they only do two things, eat and make little beetles.

I've had them for a few weeks now and date I say luckily they aren't as bad this year. Hoping it's bc of our drought last year. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate them!!!

No!! Cry cry cry. I hope it's awhile before they show up here. Yuck. This year I'm at least bringing my blooms inside instead of watching them get gobbled.

We have so many pests but not these, thank heavens!! I think I would have buckets of soapy water all over and be a crazy lady trying to knock them into it.. What a miserable scourge.

Just saw two on Easter Basket. We don't normally get more than about a half dozen or slightly more around here. Hope our luck prevails, but I have to admit this is the earliest I've seen them here, but then, spring started earlier than usual this year also.

Anyone else note how many they get ? I decided to keep track this summer .. just out of curiosity. Today I got 7 in my bucket. Disgusting. Do they take a bite out of the buds ? Or is that some other monster ?

I found about a dozen or so grubs while preparing my vegetable garden and while weeding my rose beds the last month. The grubs were not as densely populated as some years. I think it will be an average or slightly below average for numbers this year. They almost make me give up on this hobby.

I am on an obsessive mission with them. Last year we took out all their faves and replaced them with "non-desirables". We had a big wisteria overhanging a pool deck that would be covered with them and then have to sweep JB poo off the deck - uh I don't think so... Took out all our raspberries, lots of wild grapevine.

Well, they're back and just eating whatever we've left. Phlox, spirea, peonies, burning bush, daylilies ... yum yum! And my neighbors don't have them ?!
