Peach, yes. Consider what you really like to eat, and plant that.

Oh I haven't met a fruit I didn't love eating! And yes, I would have the lavender on the edges near the drive way, with the fruit trees in the middle of the patch. Peaches do well here? I see them fruiting heavily, but no one seems to want to pick them, and I see fruit on the ground and on the trees looking like their gardeners don't like them! Always assumed they didn't ripen well here! I'll go to the nursery and ask for a good variety for this area!

Any other suggestions? Avocados any good? Anyone tried a cocktail tree? Is it just a gimmick?

Sometimes you see fruit left behind if birds did their little "just taste a few holes here and there" or squirrels or roof rats frequent the area. When I lived in Contra Costa County - so a wee tad more inland and hot and sunny than you - I also an asian pear, orange, fig, Santa Rosa Plum (see you have a plum - can't recommend this variety enough - talk about prolific and low care!) and a pie cherry (the sour cherries don't need a pollinator - also something you just plan on sharing with the birds). They all were happy, producing trees.

Thanks, Maggie! My plum is a Santa Rosa! When we lived more in the south bay, the plum and apricot were prolific bearers. Up here in the cooler peninsula, they still bear fruit, but nothing like the my old house! I think I'm going to try for a peach and see how it goes! I'll report after the nursery trip :)

Another plum! Peaches are more work (spraying) at least that's how it was in my yard. If you do plant a peach, make sure temps are usually warm in the ripening weeks or they won't be sweet.

Ah, kittymoonbeam, that I can't guarantee! Maybe that's why all the neighborhood peaches are rock hard and left un-picked! I am off to God's Little Acre in south San Jose today. I'll ask them what they say about peaches! Thanks for the tip!

Well, I unwisely took my son with me! We came back with a variegated lemon, a calamondin, a dwarf avocado, a grand duchy jasmine, and a dwarf peach!
