First wool rug. Is this normal?

We recently purchased a wool 8x10 rug from TJ M and have noticed shedding at the base of the furniture where our feet rest on the rug. Never having owned a wool rug we are unsure if this is normal and will abate over time or is it a sign of an inferior product that should be returned? I don't think we "shuffle " our feet around any more than average!

A high end wool rug will not shed, but a mid to lower priced one will. Every wool rug I've ever bought from Safavieh over the years has shedded frightfully, but my Karastans and handmade orientals never have. Generally it will stop. Does your vacuum pull all the shedding out? As in, no lose threads showing through the nap? Then it should be fine. Right now I'm fighting a dozen white towels bought from TJM. Every time I wash them, the lint filter is stuffed with fistfuls of white fluff. Soon I'll have no towels left . . .

Hand tufted rugs will shed endlessly and from my limited experience, most Safavieh rugs are hand tufted. Google the term "hand tufted" and you will learn a lot. I found a Craigslist Safavieh 10 x 14 rug with a colorway that I LOVED but the glue breakdown was even worse than the wool shed. The glue left a talc like residue that was odorous and worrisome. We had just installed new hardwood floors so I was also concerned about possible off gassing and discoloration of our new floors. My $550 Craigslist bargain was donated to Goodwill.

Our wool rug in the LR still sheds after several years. Need to keep tending to it and/or vacuuming it because the cats will eat the fuzz. And little girl kitty has pulled up some threads.

Don't know if I'd buy wool again though I like this rug. The poly rug that I had originally looks great after I get it steam cleaned. The wool rug cleans great, too.

I have a wool & silk hand tufted Safavieh rug that sheds. For some time after we purchased it you'd look down and see lint around the rug. Got on my nerves for a while. It became less as time went on until it stopped. Even though I believe it's advised against, I do use the vacuum beater bar on it. The rug still looks great after, I'd say it's been, six years. You'd think it would be thin after all that but it's still full and comfortable under foot.

All of my wool rugs shed, they are all from Pottery Barn so no too expensive.

High end wool rugs don't shed much.

    cheap rugs shed alot.

I was given a tip once: scratch the rug a few times. If it sheds a lot, it will likely continue to shed. I've heard that tufted rugs will forever shed. I prefer polypropylene rugs over hand-tufted wool rugs.

I bought a cheap tufted wool rug for my son's bedroom. It shed horribly for maybe a year but the shedding does eventually stop. And this thing was CHEAP, so if it managed to stop shedding, I would think there is hope for any rug.

Its normal! My wool rugs have shed like crazy for the first month or so (I make sure to vacuum frequently), then a little more than average for a few months, and after that I don't notice much shedding. Mine are cheapish, from rugsusa.

Thank you, everyone. It was a $399 rug which is probably considered inexpensive but still an expense for me. The tag says that it is tufted, handmade in India. Compare at $675

It sounds as though I can safely put up with the shedding and hope it lessens over time. I too read you should not use a vacuum with a beater bar but that is what I have so that is what I will use. Just glad to know it will not shed to nothing!!

    I appreciate your help:)

I use my vacuum with beater bar as well (just avoid fringe if you have it!). I do set it for "high pile" carpet, so I figure that probably helps.

Tufted rugs unfortunately are not a good idea, they're not well made, as you'll find out if you google them. I have a few smaller ones but none of them have ever shed. My wool woven or genuine Orientals have also never shed.

I do think it lessens over time, but my housekeeper says they shed forever. Lesson learned, here, oh well!

I think we will just live with the rug. It is in the seating area (not foot traffic) area of our three season porch which gets less overall use than the main areas of the home. I guess I should have done more research but I'll be smarter next time. Thanks again to all who responded (I neglected to thank individually on the responses, sorry for my poor manners!)
