What I saw this week that I really loved......

Escallonia is used a lot around here, in fact I have a short (length, not height) hedge of mixed Escallonia and Privet that I like. Before moving up here to Crescent City, I'd not paid any attention to Escallonia, knew the name, but had no use for it really. I see it a lot here and it's okay, not thrilling, but useful.

Then a couple of days ago I'm on a street that I've driven every day for 3 years and WOW ! What is that ?! My first thought was Escallonia ? I went back the next morning to get out of the car and get a better look, then learned that it is indeed Escallonia.....Escallonia 'Apple Blossom'...and it's been let grow to its full glory, not trimmed into some rectangle or cube. Why am I not seeing more of this? Yesterday I did come across two more of them, also on a corner that I pass almost daily, never noticed them before nd I'm happy to see that they also have been planted in spots where they will be allowed to grow to full size....

Well, I need to take these people Cookies or Brownies and ask for a couple of cuttings...lol..

I'm fond of Escallonia at any size.

I love a full grown plant. Here most things are sheared into blobs or blocks by a "crew". People think that's the way it's supposed to look.

Yep, and because Escallonia is so useful for hedging, that's what we usually see here...this one just floored me....

I also have to add that I admire the restraint that gardener has used in allowing that plant to take center stage with only the roses and callas to the side to complement it..if it were me, I would have that space jammed full of other plants also....lol.

I can't believe that I've been so totally ignorant of Escallonia...the rosy one is always used it seems, now I've found Apple Blossom and see that there is also a white one ! Seems that in commerce you usually find the pink ones most often...that is what 'they' think will sell and here I am, always searching out the white ones....did finally get a white gaura that was stumbled across in a small wholesale nursery, one flat of them...and just got seeds of white centranthus to replace what was left in the 'move'...Lost my white Coleonemas to Wilt here, but want to replace them in tubs...now I see these two wonderful Escallonias and all you see used are the 'rosy' ones

I'm frequently in vane search mode for "whites", too. White-flowering bauhinia, Chorisia (old name), white sollya... Although I recently deadheaded many, I have quite a few Gaura 'Whirling Butterflies' should you ever need seed.

Thank you very much for the offer of Gaura seed....the one that I bought will flower soon and I will then have plenty...I had put out a call for white Centranthus seed on my 'other' garden site and some were sent to me that are now happily sown in my seed trays and when she has seed from her white Lychnis, I will receive some of those also...White is just so 'clean', white & green. last year I had a surprise Ox-Eye Daisy pop up and liked it so much that I spread some of the seed into other beds..it's such a nice blender.....LOL...well I'm sure that you know the end of that tale....it will sow itself very well, thank you, you do not need to help it out and nothing in the world must seed itself as much as that daisy. I'm still scraping out seedlings by the thousand....
