I love a lantern, but not sure they're so good at directing the light downward...

Because you are so used to the terrible light given from your lighting..these open lanterns will reflect light throughtout the space..use the highest wattage recommended and maybe go for the 6-9 lights/candle style it will light up that entire area..also you can drop that light much lower because you also have a upstairs flushmount light...that one can also be larger.

I don't know if you'd like these or if they'd fit the space, but they sure add lots of interest; I'd supplement these with recessed down lights in the corners of the ceiling (with no shadows cast by the chandelier) and switch them separately to provide more light than the decorative chandeliers. I've used the second option in an entry similar to yours ("Artichoke" originally by Louis Poulsen).
