Pictures would help, but, yes, BER presents in a few different ways, and sometimes it's dry and hard, leathery, etc.

Once fruit has BER, it won't go away or heal on that fruit. The problem that manifests as BER actually occurred as a calcium deficiency within the developing fruit much earlier before you could see it. The plant will usually outgrow the problem, though, and produce unblemished fruit later, unless it's a paste/plum type.

Agree with all gorbelly said. There is no cure but plant maturing time and consistent soil moisture levels.

Last year I was so upset that my first beautifully developing tomatoes ended up with BER. After I disposed of them and the plant kept producing it never happened again!

Forgot to add that it is much more common in container plants then with in ground plants since it is more difficult to keep the soil moisture stabilized. The bigger the container the easier it will be.

You can cut off the BER and use the rest of the tomato if a secondary mold hasn't set in. It's more common early in the season, if you water erractically, and with certain large varieties. You don't see grape or cherry tomatoes with BER.

Exactly right that it is about calcium uptake in the plants and not about calcium concentration in the soil. In fact, high soil magnesium can interfere with calcium uptake, even if there is loads of calcium in the soil. There is a popular myth that epsom salt (which in gardening is treated as some sort of magic sauce) can prevent BER. In fact, epsom salt can actually encourage it.

It is also varietal problem.

All these years I have had only Roma and San Marzan with BER problem and that was 6 or 7 years ago.I stopped growing them.

BER is also more of container growing problem due to uneven moisture level.
