Purple Hollywood Glam -- the saga continues

Hi all,

We finally got our silvery chair to go in the *purple* room, and it looks cool. In fact it picks up some of the purply tones because the silver velvet is so reflective.

The issue now, is I am not so sure I loved my previous carpet choice, and even the backup I am not sure about.

Here is a quick shot of the chair in the room (never mind the messy bed -- we are also still looking for bedding).

...and here is closeup of the previously thought selected carpets.

We thought we settled on the one of the right (its less busy), but now we are not so sure. We wanted something lighter than the walls and fairly neutral if we ever tired of the purple, but something looks off.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I think you need to look at the room as a whole, not just how the carpet works with the chair (which is really cool but will never appear to be gray because it is so reflective). I would find the bedding with shades of gray before you get choose the carpet. If the carpet works with your bedding and accessories, it won't have to "go" with the chair.

I think what might be making it look off is the way everything is playing against the carpet that's currently there. I'm taking my hands and blocking it out when viewing on my monitor, and I think your first choice - the carpet on the right - is the perfect choice. It's understated but elegant. I agree that it doesn't have to match the chair exactly; in fact, the room will have more depth and interest if tones are complementary but not matching. I think the lighter carpet with the white pattern is too busy.

A lot would depend on the bedding, but looking at your room now with its large areas of solid and dark colors (wall, headboard) I think the lighter rug with its beautiful pattern and silvery glow would be my choice. Since it has only two tones it won't be as busy as one might think, and it definitely gives off a glamour vibe, which the other one does not. You don't spend the majority of your day in this room so I think it's safe to go for something that you wouldn't think of putting in a living room.

I would go with the carpet on the right in a lighter colorway (lighter than the chair).

@IdaClaire, I think you are right. I tried a couple of closeups where I just got the rug with several surfaces (chair fabric, bed, nightstand), and its looking a little better again (see pics below).

@Ingrid_vc so.CA zone 9 (wow that was a handful to type) -- I totally get that the one on the left has more of the "glammy" patterns, but do you think the diamond one is not glam at all? I sometimes feel that the glam stuff draws a from mid-century-modern and art deco with a little extra bling...but maybe I just don't get it :)

This room is so outside of my comfort zone from a design, color, furniture style and texture base I am wondering if I am just inventing my own thing anyway :)

@Gooster, for this pattern this is the lightest color....
