Hi Mary. I had some losses too. My craigii croaked about a month after I got it from those brown spots that turn into mush. Lost two golden hahnii pups, found a bunch of dried out leaves and recently lost my Metallica variegated to rot.

Aww, that's too bad... my Cragii is hanging on, I hope I can save it. Surprisingly, my 3 Gold Hahni survived, it was 2 Silver Marginated that didn't make it. Thank God I had back-up ones... good luck!

It's so sad when we lose our Sans! I think they take so long to grow, it's heartbreaking to loose even one. I struggled with my Craigii, I think I got it around the same time as Nancy did, lost it, bought another and lost it too. I'm kind of Craigii shy now. Good yours is holding on Mary.

Vitorama, I didn't realize you lost two craigii. Everytime I saw another listed I was tempted but decided against it.

The main gray lady aurea croaked but there is still a pup. That was the plant that had the mealies along with the other plant I got from JC, the silver blue.

The two plants I was most upset about was the metallica variegated and the masoniana (yellow) variegated. Bob Smoley sent me those as substitutes for sans I ordered that he didn't have. They were two that I probably never would have ordered but really liked them once I had them.

Mary, I would love to see a picture of some of your jade plants.

I would love to see the jades too, along with that gray lady aurea! Now is the time of year they can all recover.

Have faith. I had the worst time growing Bantal's Sensation until I got a bunch of them on clearance at Lowe's. Almost 24 plants for $16. Gave a lot away and still have a bunch growing well for me. Can't tell you why. Same with Forescate, It just puped for me and hope I can grow a pot full.

This was my worst year for my hahnii collection.

Hi Nancy, your Gray Lady Áurea looks great, sadly, I lost mine, but it was before Winter started so I can't blame Old Man Winter, . I have a picture catalog of all my Jades, but the pics are from 2 years ago, I can post my favorites from those old pics and later this Summer I will take updated pics of them all. Sadly, I lost about 5-6 this Winter, but I just started replacing some with new orders that haven't come in yet.

It's actually way taller now, I just lost one of the tallest leaves.

All of these are way bigger now, can't wait to start the photo shoot!

Well good luck with your "Legolas," and if a leaf ever falls off, please keep me in mind...

I wish 'Legolas' came true from leaves. It is possible to get another variegate, but like a variegated Sans leaf cutting it is rare. The plant also has to stay balanced.....you don't want it reverting to green, but the white leaves are parasitic and sap energy so you don't want too many of them. You want to give it enough light to grow, but not so much that it burns. Sigh. I love it though and I love the challenge. In my last pic is also a small variegated Gollum(?)...the larger tube leaves......which shows much promise. The small plant is 'Maruba Nishiki' getting its golden summer leaves. This is an attractive and much easier jade.

how do you overwinter your jades and your sanseverias in zone 6? I'm in zone 9b and although I own lots of succulents I am new to jades and sans. Im not sure if I should use a row cover to throw over my pots or try to bring them inside. I don't have much room (I live in a "tiny home" 200sq ft on 5 and a half acres of property. I have sheds and a barn with grow lights I can set up, and I also have a 500 SG foot hoop house which is holding a tractor and other supplies for the property right now because the ventilation in there sucks. I can create a more controlled environment if I need too,but if I can just throw a row cover over my pots at night, and keep them where they are it would be much less work for me right now (or when it starts getting colder the end of November.) any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Ryan, I keep my Sans indoors at all times, and overwinter my Jades in my classroom from Fall to Spring because the Sans take up all my indoor space in my home. Sans & Jades cannot tolerate frost, but can handle temperatures as low as 40-45, so you can use your barn or shed with the grow lights and they should be fine. I don't know how cold it gets in your zone, but if it goes down below 50 I would bring them in the barn. Hope that helps. Also, remember to water less in Winter, (once a month), they don't like to be too wet in cooler temps.

Thanks. Over winter it usually gets down to 35 degrees cold consistently. I have successful overwintered a lot of my succulents with little protection, and I also have a lot of alpine succulents which can handle down to zone 3, which I started collecting exactly for that reason. It can get as cold as 25-27 degrees F for about an hour right before the sun comes up on the coldest nights. I have found that the lowest temps reported on the forecast usually only last a short time right before the sun comes up and it doesn't usually hurt the plants if the temp only drops for that short amount of time and I throw a frost cover over them. However, I already have one grow light set up for a few cacti seedlings, so I'll make room for my more tender succulents. Like my jades and sans.

Better keep only the common all green sans that low. The variegates are more sensitive. It takes only once and a few minuets to cause disaster. Jades are much more tuff if you keep them dry. They may loose a few leaves but the stems will survive. Now the other sans like cylindrical, Fischeri "Leopard Bat", Kirkii 'Silver Blue', masoniana, (Schweinfurhia) erythraeae and a few others are much more stronger in cooler temps. At least I never had a winter loss on these.

Thanks for the info Stush here is a picture of the only two Sans I currently don't keep in a greenhouse, the greenhouse I'm talking about isn't on my property, but I use it for some of my plants that I can't take home. I have a moonshine sans in the greenhouse which I'm referring to along with a couple other plants like a willow leaf ficus etc...

Second Mary's ID. I had some nice one for years and lost them this past winter. Got replacement and so far doing fine. (thanks Chris) Still have some rot issues this summer with my sans. It had been way too wet this year. I am going to build an improved green house stand in my basement this year with LED tube lights. Being sold for direct replacement in regular 4 ft. shop lights (F32T8 - 2050 lumens). Plus I'll save 50% off my last years cost of lighting. 5000k light which is close to daylight. Way better than the T8's I've used in the past. Plus I'm placing them much closer to the light fixture. Still keeping my 55 gallon tank for my Hahnii group but with 4 LED's instead of the two tube T8's like last year. More than double the light plus closer to daylight.

Seems like UFO technology with computers and lighting today. I have 100 times more memory in a zip card than my first computer had and it was a monster in size. Too hard to believe today.
