We left about a foot and did moldings. We have smaller uppers above the regular uppers. Here are pics, we are in the middle of painting but you can see how much storage we will have. Hope this helps!

My cabinets are not in yet, but I'm doing cabinets to the ceiling. Here's an elevation I did of how they'll look. 10' ceilings. 42" uppers. 18" uppers above that and then 6" molding.
