For the fireplace I would redo the grout so that it is the same color as the tile. Remove the scroll work. Paint the surround/mantel the same color as the tile. Add a large piece of artwork above it.

What color would you like it to be? Are you able to retile it?

Hi crystal here are my suggestions: 1) on the short wall with the ac thermostat I would add in a short sofa table with 1 tall table lamp and some decorative pieces and a mirror on the wall $200, 2) I would also update the ceiling fan to something modern like Aire Minka Hi-Wind or Hampton Bay Pilot both available at Homedepot.com approx $200-300 any modern looking fan will do. 3) for the fire place, I would strip it of its current framing and add a stone or tile surround that extends about 1-2ft on either side and carries to the ceiling either in a squared format or ideally in an off-set 6x24 tile. If you have 10 ft ceilings its approx about 50-60sq ft. Make sure you select a tile that u can finish the end off with a nice bullnose. you can DIY it... approx. $250-300 @ 2.00 sq ft tile. I would then center the tv on this focal point ensuring that the tiled area peeps through behind the tv by at least a 1/4 foot on each side. 4) I would measure the window width and find or build 2 of the same width ottomans to place immediately below the windows that can double as extra seating or a foot rest. I'd do this in a rich fabric that plays off one of the boldest colors in the artwork in the room. 5) Tucked into the corner closest to the dining room I'd put in a tall potted house plant to further define the space n bring in some life approx $100. 6) on the wall opposite the dining room I'd add in an oversize artwork of your liking approx $150 on Overstock.com or JossandMaine.com 7) I'd also add in a glass coffee table in the center of the couch to offset the visual weight of the massive couch approx $200. 8) if you want to be extra and don't have small children you can also add ceiling to floor curtain panels to each window. Change the curly fluorescent bulbs in the fan light to warm white LED bulbs before choosing colors. Where is the tv going? Over the fireplace?

Try bringing out all the artwork you already have. The colors you prefer should be pretty obvious once you see them altogether.
