I would absolutely add a rug and coordinating pillows to bring in color. Possibly dark teal , rust or charcoal.

A printed accent chair would look beautiful where the piano is.

Basically you have gray & brown which IMO isn't a good match. You also have different styles of furniture: coffee is cottagey, desk is provincial, end table traditional. The chairs look to be a cool gray & the coffee table just looks cold. What is the feeling you want: neutral? warm & cozy? I'm not a fan of rugs on top of carpet to me they are just a tripping hazard. In order for the furniture to be on a rug you would need a large one not just something under the coffee table, then you would have to contend with the piano & desk. Try the chairs on each side of FP facing sofa. Take 2 pictures off each end of the grouping over sofa, its width should only be about 2/3 the sofa width at most 3/4 as wide not the whole width of sofa.

although i still feel a lot like jck, i have in a few now where they have worked with them. I think i have some great rugs.

It is the browns/greens combined with cool grays that isn't working. Slipcover the sofa in white or cream, and paint the coffee table a deeper olive green than the walls. The light gray chairs may be okay with those changes. Do not add a rug on top of carpet.

Thank you so much for all the advice. I tried moving the sofa closer to the fireplace, put the two chairs on either side of the fireplace and moved the piano to where to desk was.

I then took the advice of Decoenthusiaste and moved the piano to where the sofa was, moved the sofa in front of the window and the two chairs opposite to the sofa and I love it. I had never thought of that layout before. I now am going to rearrange the photos and work on a different coffee table. Ideas for pillow colors?

What about a slipcover over the sofa?

Perhaps an even lighter one? Is a slipcover still necessary?

I don't think I would slipcover the sofa, it will make it look ... just, yuck. I do agree that the coffee table needs to be a darker color. And just bring in some color with a couple of printed pillows for your chairs and sofa. Beautiful

So glad you tried that and like it! I'm thinking duck egg blue might be a nice accent color for the room. You could even paint the coffee table with it in a chalk paint if you don't think you'd like the darker black. It is similar to the blue pillow you have now, but a bit more green. You've done a great job! Started out well and I like your tweeks. I agree that an area rug would ground things and I like celery girl's example. I have an area rug over carpet and don't have much trouble with traveling. I adjust it every 2 months or so, but il doesn't move that much and adds great effect!

The painted coffee table isn't working in the room. That element IMO should be darker finish to ground the area. I showing walnut cubes, but other types of tables could work. I have added an artificial plant in the corner for contrast and texture.

I've added some complementary color patterned pillows to the sofa and chairs.

The mirror over the fireplace doesn't add any color or contrast with the silver frame. I think a canvas would do better over the FP. The frame items over the piano are too small for that space.

Beverly - you should try working with the re-arrangement she has already done.

I think the new arrangement darkens the room unattractively.
