Central air blowing at inconsistent force

Over the past month, we have noticed - especially at night - that when the central a/c is running that the air will blow at a steady force, then all of a sudden drop to about half force for one second before going back to normal. Literally, one second. Recently now it's gotten to the point of doing this nonstop sometimes, and a few times the blowing has stopped completely for a second and then started back up. We have researched this ourselves but cannot find what could possibly be causing this. It's almost like a car that is idling and *almost* cutting out, then ramps back up to normal speed when you hit the gas. Our HVAC is gas, however I wouldn't think these systems function like car engines. The a/c has been working and cooling normally, other than this bizarre issue.

We have a call in to a repairman but it may be awhile before we can get someone out. Any ideas until then? I would think that if it's an electrical issue, the entire system would cut off, not just dim down for a second and then go back to normal. ??
