A fire surround is made up of a mantel, an outer panel or tiling and an outer hearth. Do you just want to change the look of the face?

It may not look like it, but the stone in the photo on the left is surrounded with shiplap paneling.

Other than a good cleaning, you may not need to do anything to the existing fireplace. It would be good to have a certified professional inspect the fireplace to make sure it is safe to use.
