Large Fireplace Mantle Decor

We have a 1920's center hall colonial with a very long and narrow living room. It also has an enormous fireplace and I'm trying to figure out how to decorate the mantle. Here are 2 different styles, please let me know what you think.

I uploaded 2 pictures of each design, one that shows the zoomed in detail of the mantle and another that shows the bigger picture of the whole room. The additional photos are below in the comments.

I think the first pic is perfect...you have dealt with the scale well...and the neutrals are more elegant than the shot of color...what always happens is something else always jumps out...since this is a lovely ..inviting..functional space...I wonder what the use is for the bench with the cubbys underneath?...that looks like the perfect spot for a comfy inviting chair..side table...lamp for reading...etc...the bench seems more appropriate for temporary seating and storage in an entry way or foyer setting...is the door nearby?

Clear everything off the mantel, and move to TV to where the art is. Put art on or above the mantel, then use sconces or simpler lamps.

Hi Annie,

lI also think the first picture is perfect. The proportion is right on. I like the choice of the nuetrals, it makes everything stand out more to be a true focal point . Very nice job.

thanks so much for the feedback! I wasn't sure if the mantle looked to cluttered, but at the same time it's so big, I'm trying to balance it out and the TV as well.

we have 3 kids under 5, so the bench cubbies are for toy storage for now. in a few years, we will move that stuff to the basement and put an armchair or something there.

also, we cant move the couch down to be across from bench, there is an archway/opening there to the kitchen. so really the only spot for the TV is on the mantle. this is our family room, not a formal sitting room.
