You can prune it without much concern almost any time of year. New growth will then start from the closest leaf nodes to the cut. Generally, best practices are cut a branch 6-8 inches above the v to promote growth and branching but sometimes that rule can't be applied. Some trees like to die back at the cut a bit. i have noticed this happens mostly during fall or winter pruning reds and rainbows cultivars.

Here is one option, like kms said, leave 6 to 8 inches past each "v" to be safe. It looks like this should leave you with a 7 tip tree. If you went down one more "v" you'd only have 3 tips, and if you went up one "v" you wouldn't be accomplishing much.

Initially the new branches may be parallel to the parent branch- this is often cited as a negative to forcing branching by cutting back... but in my experience gravity and nature eventually take over and you do end up with a more natural looking branch structure.

You may find that the first two cuttings on the left result in nice trees that you might eventually favor over the parent tree. Good luck!

Hi there! I would also recommend to pot those in bigger pots / refresh soil/ root prune if at all possible - the tree to pot ratio indicates these are most likely very root bound with little soil to provide moisture or root growth. They would benefit a lot from that as well as it being aesthetically balanced and the larger pot with more open soil would give you some more weight, especially after watering and your selective pruning. I may try that as well. I pruned as above and now have lots of cuttings i will try to root. also have many seeds as pods just opened as well :) Hope I have alot of friends who want plumies!!!

I have a potted palm that keep blowing over in the years, so I used long zip ties to secure it to a metal post. It's been there a month now and doesn't blow over anymore!
