If you can't run the cabinets to the ceiling, then run material up the soffit with a crown to expand the appearance.

Think about a contrasting wood for your open shelving to break up the white; perhaps with black metal brackets. And if you get a pretty fabric with color for your window treatment, that too will break it up. Alternatively, you could go with natural woven wood shades to give it a bit of additional texture.

I'd either go to the ceiling or take it back to cabinet height -- where you are now isn't a good spot. I wouldn't worry about "too much white" at this point -- you'll add color with valence, rug, and all the stuff that goes into a kitchen once you are living in it. Plus you have nice counters and other sources of texture and variety. Agree that any shelves should be some kind of contrasting material though.

I'd toss those blinds and do an outside-mount Roman shade hung just below the ceiling. And change the lighting, too, obviously. ;)

Just curious: Why didn't you do an over-the-range microwave? It seems like it would've been appropriate for this kitchen.

Change the light bulbs in your kitchen. Look how flat and lifeless your kitchen looks when compared to a kitchen with better color light bulbs.
