Please help me finish this room

The CHAIRS, SOFAS, COFFEE TABLE, and CHANDELIER STAY. Who can help me with accent tables, accent pillows, rug and what to do with walls flanking fireplace BESIDES BUILT-INS. The walls flanking the fireplace are slightly
asymmetrical. Any advice would be so very appreciated.

You might need to adjust the sofas and the rug just slightly to accommodate the chairs next to the fireplace.

Honestly, that rug doesn't go with the glamorous theme. Being natural fiber it has a more earthy, casual feel to it. I'd replace it with something beige with hints of floral.

Moving the chairs would be nice, unless they are the prime TV viewing chairs. Are the backs of the chairs navy? I just can't tell on my iPad.

I agree about moving the chairs to either side of the FP as the height of them is so tall it becomes a visual barrier to the room.

Looks as though centering the sofas between the two sliding doors will help the room also.

Place chests and mirrors or art behind the tall wingback chairs.

Repeat the curve of your wing chairs by putting a matched pair of demi-lune tables right and left of the FP. Then hang a piece of art above each of them (no wider than 75% of the tables' widths.)

I like the mix of the rug with the slipcovered sofa and the chairs. Sure there are other rugs that would look great too but this is an interesting look.

Are you keeping the gold curtains? Everyone says to "hang 'em high" but they seem to be hung a little too high. Maybe just 8 to 10 inches over the windows would look better. Or maybe the rod could come away from the wall so drape is not laying flat on the window frames.

You just need art on the walls flanking the fireplace.

I post this all the time but hopefully it's useful.

Please please please do NOT buy art from big box stores!

ONLY buy art from a place where the artist's name is listed.

Get art from places that benefit the artists themselves (so not a mass produced place like homegoods or any big store) the following sites have work from real artists but with affordable options. You probably can find art for less than you would get from those mass produced factory art places like pier 1.

I moved the chairs. I'm not crazy about the it bc they are prime tv viewing spots and it hides the black fabric design on the back. I'm still willing to try it though. Maybe if I arrange the other furniture differently? I love the pic Beverly included.

While the curtains are hung too high for sure, I don't want to mess with them unless I'm going to change them, which I'm willing to do.

I dislike the rug. It's jute and not soft and comfy.

If you put the chairs that, you should pull the sofas closer to the front edge of the rug. Thebchairs look very smushed back there.

Ps I actually liked the chairs where they used to be, just not with the table between them.

The rug is too small and too casual for the room. Look at area rugs made of wool with a richer texture. The chairs should flank the fireplace. You need art on the walls. And you need some accessories that match the blue in those chairs.

Yes, the chairs where they were gave the room more character. I assume part of the purchase decision was due to the beauty of the back of them. Now they are covering part of your beautiful fireplace.

Try this furniture layout and place a table behind the sofa facing the Fireplace/tv:

    Spring House · More Info

Will you see the lovely backs of the chairs as you enter from the right side of the room?

Also, there's a lot of black in that fireplace, especially with the black TV on top. I would switch the black stone for something light. Agree with others who say change up the rug, add 2 consoles/chests on either side of fireplace with artwork on the walls. Lovely room!

Swap chairs and sofa on the left ,get a bigger table in between maybe a rectangle, on the walls I would hang two identical ornate mirrors and get a striking pot for the plant and move it next to the window
  • 9 years ago
    More mirrors

    Put art on the walls

widen the space between the chairs and turn them on a bit of an angle

get ride of the table between them, or move it to the side where I have the blue circle

you need to style the coffee table with some objects

its really a beautiful room. You have great taste

Is it possible to spread the chairs a little farther apart and then angle them in more so that the blue fabric shows? Get more of the blue fabric and have lumbar pillows made for the chairs.

As I mentioned you might need to tweek the rug. Try centering the sofas on the rug. Maybe move the rug closer to the fireplace. You'll need to play around with it.

The chairs are better next to the fireplace but see if you can turn them to show more blue + add pillows.

Does the rug stay? You could use a much larger rug to ground the space.

Pillows for the chairs would break up the expanse of everything in the room looking neutral.

You have some unfortunate pieces of furniture and I think that's why you're struggling to make it work, because they really don't. But if you're going to keep them, then I would say .... I normally say if you're going to have two couches that they should face each other. But in this case, you're going to have to put them in a L shape. I would put one facing the fireplace and leave one backing up to the window wall. Then I would put the two chairs on the wall facing the window wall. I would put two matching console type pieces of furniture on either side of the fireplace with art above. I would upgrade the area rug to a patterned traditional style with muted colors. I would upgrade the drapery panels, they do not match anything.

I totally understand jute rugs. They are extremely rough. Most people use them as a bottom layer when doing a layered rug look. They just aren't soft enough to walk on with bare feet.

I have a collection of wool and silk rugs that are divine on bare feet. These match the glamorous feel of the room you are going for.

If you move the chairs back to the original location, you will see the backs better and that amazing fabric. I think a neutral rug with a faded vintage-looking pattern will look amazing. Here are my faves:

7x10 Wool & Silk Rug (to match your curtains)

Or you can get one that has more browns in it to better replace that jute rug.

8x11 tan wool & silk rug

You people are awesome! Please don't leave me yet! The chairs just can't go in front of the fireplace. Nobody will sit in them. We could either do L shape with the couches and two chairs facing the windows or chairs spread out and angled in (like attached pic).

FYI, the design on the chairs is black, not navy blue.

I'm hearing I should get a traditional neutral rug in a larger size. I like that idea.

What about an accent COLOR. Throw pillows for the sofa?

COLORS for the art to go in either side of the fireplace?

What style of console table to go under the art?

    What about lamps?

The curtains are throwing me for a loop. Do they make the room too heavy? If you think they need to be replaced can you make a suggestion as to what fabric? Color, solid, pattern??

I like the current layout since the chair backs are gorgeous. Go for a navy/tan/gold rug:

A pair of related but not matched oversized vertical paintings in tans/gold/blue is all you need to flank the fireplace--no tables. And the gold curtains can stay!

You could just do a larger sized rug. Merida and Stark do cut to order and are very good quality. I have in my family room and love it. All my furniture sits on the rug.

You can't see the sofas with the chairs this way.

You need to try a few more arrangements. Several have been mentioned.

    Rug move closer to FP

Sofas move away from FP about 18 inches

Chairs are in front of FP but angled in as much as possible

Chairs have their front feet on the rug

You want the chairs to work but they just don't look right as they are.

Or try the L_ shape with the sofas. You won't know until you try.

I love your room, including the rug (adds texture, but I guess it won't work if it's uncomfortable). I think some graphic, abstract art (Williams Sonoma has some) and more lighting (Restoration Hardware for the corners of the sofa, maybe) would work wonders. So pretty and cozy!

The sofas are so inviting. Can you reach the cocktail table if you sit on the sofa?

Maybe place the sofa where the chairs used to be and place both chairs in front of the stairs.

My thoughts on your drapes. Can you extend the rods out a bit more so that they have room to stack back neatly? Can you hem them so they barely kiss the floor? I suspect they will look fine once they can hang and drape properly.

Leelee said you can't see the couches with the chairs there, but that is really only a problem in a photo. In real life, people are moving into the room and that isn't an issue. This arrangement allows people to use the chairs for TV.

Your room is fantastic...I absolutely love the chairs and rug with the comfy sofas...not sure what the other posters are talking about;/

i think maybe it is the rug size?...9x12 would give you a bit more length so the legs of the chairs are on rug and you have a couple feet to walk into the space..this is the same set up I have and love it...

What is the measurement of the space on each side of the fireplace?

Erin, is your head spinning yet from all of the suggested furniture arrangements. Personally, I'd put the chairs back the way you originally posted them, and purchase a different table to go in between them. In this position, you can see the beauty of the chairs and you can see the sofas.

Your chairs have a lovely design on the back but it would be nice to see them not in front of the fireplace. Is it possible to put them on the right of the fireplace so you can still see the backs? Just switch that couch and the chairs? It would be great to see what that looks like.
