Dishwasher across from the stove

Hi, I'm trying to decide where to put my sink and dishwasher in my new galley kitchen layout. The aisle will be about 44 inches wide. It seems that most people think that having the sink across from the stove is a poor idea. My only other option would be to put the dishwasher across from the stove instead. This would actually also give me a longer run of countertop, otherwise the sink would break it up with about a foot and a half of countertop on one side and maybe two feet of countertop on the other. How often do you find that you need to have both the stove and the dishwasher open at the same time? Opinions?

Personally I find never, but people vary a lot.

Start keeping track of how often you do that in the current layout and that should give you some idea. Your habits are the ones that are most relevant to your kitchen.

It can be that two people working back to back get in each others way. And block any through traffic. You may not need a 30" wide sink or something wide like that. Especially if you are going single bowl. 21-24" is more than enough and then you could put the dw farther from the stove. Post a measured layout if you want.

I am also having this issue. I have an island with the sink and dishwasher in it and am struggling with how to place the stove. I do have room to avoid them opening into one another, but when I do that, the whole room looks odd to me. I think it is really off balance looking, which will be a big deal, since I plan to have a visible and architectural vent hood, and the kitchen is open to the rest of the house. The aisles are a bit wider, 47-48 inches, so theoretically both can be open at once and accessed from the side, but I am honestly trying to remember a time when this might have been an issue for me. In 20 years, I honestly can’t come up with a situation where the dishwasher and stove were in use at the same time, except maybe a holiday or two. I am almost always the only one in my kitchen. What did you end up doing, and how is it working out?

I haven't done the remodel yet, we're still saving up. I just like the idea of getting all my ducks in a row first. One comment, that said to track how often I open both my stove and oven at once, made sense to me. Of course, I can't do that since I don't currently have a dishwasher! But I do feel like it can definitely be avoided, as I am pretty much the only person working in my kitchen and I won't be doing dishes simultaneously while actively cooking. It would be nice to see pictures of someone else who has done this, but since I have had trouble finding any I think I'll just have to jump and hope for the best!

Can you put up a floor plan for us to have a look at?? I think you may have to choose the lesser of 2 evils. With a 44" walkway - you need all of that space when opening the oven to take care of what's inside so you really don't want the sink right there in case someone is assisting you or cleaning up as you cook... on the flip side - a dishwasher door drops 30" into a walkway - that leaves 14" which is not enough space to stand in and cook....

Are you a one person kitchen or active space with many cooks/cleaners in the space??

    Can you move things around??
