I am just about to plant a new VdB fig tree in the sunny southwest corner of the front garden, in Sunset zone 23 (no real frost, plenty of sun). I would like the fig to grow into a single trunk tree with maximum shade canopy for the garden and low enough overall height for easy harvesting. I would welcome recommendations for a guide or suggestions for the first few years' pruning schedule and technique.
