I would not select Rose of Sharon for such a shady area. They like full to mostly sun.

based on your words.. we really have no clue what your shade means ...

all you are left with.. is trying it ... and if ends up not working.. you move it in a few years ...

of course.. you shouldnt plant one.. if it is invasive in your area ...

shade doesnt really kill things.. it can just affect \vigor ... which might translate into less flowers .. i this situation ..

Ok thanks. I saw some in a shady area and was hoping for a shade tolerant version, but it may just be tat area was shady when I saw it and sunny all the rest of the day.

Maybe a Japanese maple instead.

They are shade tolerant and will flower in the shade as well. But as Ken eludes to what kind of shade are we talking about?

I had one growing under the canopy of fairly sizable silver maple that was limbed up so it got that east and west sun. Was as dense and flowered similar to one in full sun.

Here ROS seems to appreciate as much light as possible. Both white & pink seedlings have found a home in Balto beltway sound barrier crack. Sorry for blurry pic, I was moving at the time. BTW flowers close up in sunniest part of the day.

I am constantly waging a war against privet, JH, euonymus, various tree seedlings, and ROS. They're a bit more than easy to grow here...but while they grow in the shade, they don't flower (much if at all).

I have about a million of these growing and flowering in shade- come and get 'em. Previous homeowner planted them in the woods to control erosion and they have taken over. White, lilac, and some almost a true pink I am tempted to keep.
