28 °C at 8.30 in the morning here...this summer is the hottest I can remember for years...climate change is all over us...my colleague came back from a trekking holiday in Ireland, complaining that it had been very hot there, too...Let's hope that the G20 in Hamburg open their eyes for the problems finally!

Very nice arrangement of beautiful hosta. Do you have fun moving them around for best effect?

Karin, you mentioned Ireland, I wonder how Denis is coping. I know his water supply is rainwater catchers and a storage tank.

Donna, there's no fun in moving them around with my back. They get their place once the frosts are over and there they stay till next spring.

Sorry Ken, climate change shouldn't be political but it is and we all will have to live with the consequences.

I was also concerned about Denis when my colleague told her story. She had been at the west coast for a week and they had not a single rainy day.

Renaat told me that his town had forbidden the use of trinking water for gardens and he has no other supply.

It was so hot today that I could not go outside, but the hostas don't look too bad...I'm just happy that the well is still working...

Ken, I'm not political at all, just worried...the world is changing and I can see it in my surroundings...

That's because all the rain has been on the east coast of North America. It's been pouring here regularly for months, way more than usual.

Most unusual for Wales Dave, I hope you can keep them looking as great as they are, looks like you might get some light showers sun/mon and some heavier stuff tuesday evening acc to one of the weather sites I use. Hopefully it will be correct and you get a good drenching. Like my self it is time to have some extra built in redundancy in our systems ie. buy more water tanks. I use IBC tanks which hold 1000L they are great, I have 4 and many many barrels and cattle troughs and anything else that will hold water.

Karin your comment made me laugh I'm glad your colleague didn't venture up to the north west as it would have been a different story, June was crap, dull wet windy atlantic muck with the odd marginally acceptable day thrown in just to stop us launching ourselves off the cliffs of moher, plus i am high up (relatively) here in the mountains and quite often am in the clouds, in other words I have not needed to water much and my tanks are full lol. I could not deal with those temperatures you are getting, we are just not used to them, we might get 28C once or twice in a summer, our all time record is 33.3C way back in 1880 lol. while you were having 28C yesterday morning it was 5.3C here during the night, have been lighting the wood stove most evenings. A lot of my hosta flower buds have gone brown and mouldy and my hostas with white edges have rotted away the edges, too wet and cold, Poo!

Oh Denis, so sorry to hear this! I thought you were running out of water but now it is the other way round...My colleague came back tainted as if she had been in the caribbean...

We are also not used to these temperatures, it was so hot the whole week that I was mostly staying inside with the shutters down, only in the evening I could go out and tend the hostas, but they look good, which surprises me a little. Some years they got burned with less sun, maybe they have adapted better to the climate than I do...

I hope it will be better for you on your mountain for the rest of the summer!

We had 5 years of drought here in CA. Above normal rainfall this last year.

I have lived here 41 years and we have seen drought come and go. This will come and go. Doesn't anyone remember the dust bowl of the 30's? Stuff happens and weather fluctuates. Back in the 1970's we had a couple slogans here in CA... If it is brown flush it down, if it is yellow, let it mellow. My favorite was save water, shower with a friend. . Met a few good friends....

Glad to hear you are ok Denis. Of course up in the clouds you are closer to the almighty than the rest of us!

Babka I too have seen it all before, when I lived in the south east of the UK we had droughts, rivers drying up and water rationing. As you say these sort of weather events are cyclical but they are more often and more extreme than years ago.

No showers back then but sharing a bath was fun unless you got the tap end!

Sorry about the dry conditions in Wales. Flash floods here and in California (said to be in a 100 year drought caused by 'climate change) now has lakes overflowing and ski resorts with many feet of snow from winter. This is called weather.

You are right Jon it is weather, it's the unpredictability and the extremes that are cause for concern.

Ha! My DH says that here in Kansas all we have to do is look out the window and see how the climate changes hour-by-hour.

Babka - what I remember in the 70's is that Time cover article that proclaimed the coming ice age! Apparently the glaciers were coming back and we were all going to have to live under a dome.

So - I take it all with a grain of salt, and watch the weather - er, um, climate - change out the window.

Change happens.
