When can i start seeds for fall harvest?

I plant only heirloom vegetables. I am in zone 9A. Will plant tomato, cucumber, squash, watermelon, beans... All in the shade. But the worst of heat is almost here, and max temp of 104 is not uncommon. Will seeds die, or just not germinate until the weather gets cooler?

I don't know 9A conditions at all. You may want to cross post this question in the Vegetable Gardening forum, it gets a lot more participation. :-)

Start under lights indoors. Plant out when conditions are suitable. Have you ever tried some shade cloth or Agribon row cover to reduce sun?
