Save me from myself!!!!

Hi all Houzz Gurus!

I have a family room, new construction open to kitchen and dining. Blank slate walls, darker hardwood floors. I wanted to bring in color/patterns with rugs, pillows accents. My RH large white velvet down filled sofa with chaise must stay. I have cream chairs, bluish gray chairs and a patterned navy chair and 2 different rugs. I am attaching photos.......have mercy on me please.

Thanks @always1stepbehind that makes me feel better. It's a process because I like so many styles.... I don't really fit into one particular design style.

oh, oh, i love this room! i love the ideas so far, wait, i think i might have some cool pillows!

Is what seems to be art [in the corner behind chair] going to be in that room?

You have a lovely room, but I don't feel a blue rug does it any favors. As much as I Iove oriental rugs they don't seem to suit your space. If I may digress, decluttering the fireplace would help the look of the room quite a bit. I would remove the floor vases which are too small to have an impact and almost everything from the mantel. When you place the TV there, most decoration is a distraction. Having some colorful art on the walls might be a good place to go next, in addition to choosing some wonderful pillows. At that point it might become clear to you what floor covering would best complement the room.

Hi @Ingrid. I would agree that the blues aren't working.....too overpowering. The oriental in coral color was nice but you are right, not my go to style. I am in the process of trying to get hubs to agree to move the tv to the big wall. Artwork for over the fireplace. All the little "stuff" you see scattered about is just sitting around until I find a direction. How would I arrange the sofa if the tv moved?

    Hi Lori --

Ok, you're cracking me up. Hold steady, woman!

You have a beautiful home/views. Not sure how you all keep that sofa clean (I bow to your skills) but it looks amazingly relaxing.

The thing is, you have the majority of what you need for direction -- you just need to have confidence in your statement:

"I love blues, grays, greens...calming and serene. My design style has changed a lot over the years from old southern traditional to now more streamlined and monochromatic."

So as much as I can appreciate the suggestions of coral and other bright shades upthread, I don't see those working for you.

Think muted, tonal (tone-on-tone), low-contrast for your textiles. The 2nd pillow HavingFun posted is closest to that -- but ask yourself if even that's too bright.

(re your art: sometimes what we like on the walls can be the opposite of what we like elsewhere so give yourself freedom there)

I could see medium to deep muted greens (think "soft" or "forest-y" vs "bright") working well for you here as a "color-color." Ditto for a deep slate blues. These will:

    • echo your amazing view (if you go green)
    • connect well with deeper tones in outdoor FP, floor, island, wood table
    • add to your color scheme without standing out

I wouldn't use the green or blue in a higher-contrast way -- so not a straight COLOR/white (ivory) pattern. Instead, look for items that mix in other colors -- greys, blushes, sand/burlap, deeper browns -- to soften the overall look/feel.

[And if I may be so bold, I think the strongly patterned blue/whitish chair is out of place with your goals. Perhaps there's another room for it? Or it needs a big ole white throw over it? ;) ]

Below are a couple of pics that might inspire. Keep us posted!

@house vixen thank you so much! I am a super visual person and the ones you shared made me relax just by looking at them. The navy patterned chairs can be used elsewhere. I have an art piece I nabbed from another thread I am following here. I'll post it.

Anything white/cream hairy, furry, shaggy.....I'm in lol! I love textured pillows of all kinds. Was wondering if a neutral sisal rug would work here?

i am thinking they would say yes, i am not a fan, so cannot comment. i can do your whole room in the fuzzies.

Your patio looks like an invitation to sit and stay awhile so you won't have any problems with your LR.

Are you asking for help with the furniture layout? General help? Your room allows many options for changing furniture layouts which can be fun!

Do you have a room layout with sizes to post? That will help others give you more ideas. Can we see a couple more pics of the room? Are you going to use the room for dining also? A table under the chandy perhaps? What size and shape do you want for the table?

Try the sofa on the long wall or on the window wall and open the walkway area. Add the rug and then place the chairs so they create another seating area.

Looks like there is a console behind the sofa, another table with shelves holding candlesticks and a third table with the birdcage candles. Are you using the 3 different tables in the room?

Enjoy the decorating process and post updates for us!

@havingfun, I just checked it out on their website. A little more $ than I wanted to spend, but I am willing on the right rug.

Hi @Beaus Rose....thanks we do spend a lot of time out on the patio! Yes in need of all/any suggestions. The only thing that has to stay in the room is the sofa. All the other smaller scale pieces are just temporary. I need a rugs, lamps, pillows etc. and a coffee table. I have two metal end tables but I don't know if they work or not. The room is 17 x 17 and only one solid wall.... rest is open and windows. I do have a dining room table coming this week. This is it.

Here is the teak console I just oiled. I was using as a console table before. The ceilings are fourteen feet so they can handle larger pieces I think?

Hi again @nosoccermom! I do still love your design board. It is very close to what I'm looking for now, I love the green upholstered chairs are they available? I think the first rug might be a possibility. Thanks so much.
