making small condo feel spacious

last modified: 9 years ago

I am looking at another condo tomorrow. Just a couple of questions:

1. I like the same flooring and same paint color throughout a small condo to make the space seem larger. What do you guys think?

2. What do you think about recessed lights? Do you think theses type of lights make a room look smaller. Would it be better to just have a plain ceiling--no overhead lamps--just use lamps instead. The condo has a very tiny shared living/dining.

3. Would you ever tile an entire condo in the northeast with the tile that looks like wood? I think this would be cold but easy peasy maintenance.

4. Do you think white interior doors are best?

Thank you.

I agee 100% with czar. I am in a condo that has zero overhead lights recessed or an electrical box to hang a fixture so recessed would be a luxury!! Even if you have recessed lighting, you can also add lamps if needed here or there.

I can only speak from a person who lives most of the year in Florida where many, many condos in my area have been using the wood/look tile flooring. In the beginning, a few years ago, it was unique and very nice. Then it became overly commonly used and was EVERYWHERE in everybody's condo. And also in restaurants and shops - everywhere. So now, when I see the flooring somewhere, it makes me think of a restaurant or shop floor. I am only in the northeast for part of the summer, but I have an aversion to that kind of flooring.

I am in a condo in Florida and we have white interior doors everywhere. So I decided to paint the french doors between the office/guest room and the dining room BLACK - and that worked out so beautifully, very striking to me and others have commented favorably on them as well - and so the rest of the doors are all still white, but I'm thinking of going black for them, maybe one or two at a time to see how it works - gradually.

Believe me I know that Florida decor is different from the NE, but you asked for opinions and so here ya go with mine!

Yes, same flooring and paint throughout small condo.

No, recessed lights; ceiling light fixtures are reasonably priced, can be changed easily, and add so much customization to a home. Ceiling jewelry.

No, tile - except bathrooms - too cold in any area that gets snow.

Interior door color - depends on your style; I have stained solid wood and love the warmth it adds.

Janie, I would love to see pictures of your black interior doors. I live in SE Florida and would love to do this. My husband turns up his nose at the very suggestion.

I would paint all the rooms that are visible to each other the same. But, would do something different for the bathroom and bedroom.

I love the tile/wood look, and actually, have it in our TV long before it became a thing. I wouldn't do it in an entire house because it is too hard our joints as we age.

Maybe as czar suggests, area rugs, but I still wonder if it would is enough.

I know recessed lights are not popular. But as we age, we need light! You will certainly have lamps for ambiance, but nothing beats good overhead lighting.

ETA: Both my DD's live in tiny co ops. You don't want a lot of visual clutter in a small space.

Check your CC&R's and/or bylaws before tiling. There may be restrictions on flooring related to noise for those below you.

Agree w/ eld6161 about needing light. Have a fixture like this, with six 60 watt/equivalent bulbs, in spare bedroom/dressing room; total 360 watts really helps differentiate navy from black pants. In hallway & dining room I have fixtures on dimmers.

acdc - this is definitely embarrassing considering that this is a decorating forum and I don't have any updated pictures, as it turns out all I have on this computer (up here in the north) are some older pics without the new paint and furniture and rugs, but here they are anyway for what its worth - before and after. Also, here is a link - https://www.houzz.com/black-doors/p/8 - that I have saved.
