I agree these options are busy for your countertop. I'd try a taupe glass tile or a ceramic subway. These decisions are hard! Good luck.

people seem to be moving away from pencil tile and on to larger tiles. Maybe let the counters be the star and go with a more sedate backsplash like simstress recommended.

Another vote for a solid color, and I'd remove the 4" ledge before tiling, so that you get a continuous surface of tile right down to the counter -- it's a more coherent look.

Pick up some of these to try. For tiles sold per piece, I'd buy at least 3 of each to compare to your countertop. Use a grout color that blends with your tile; I don't think contrast elevates the design here. And I agree with @acm to remove the 4" backsplash before tiling. Good luck.

It seems like the options you have are very busy. Try getting a subway tile in one color. One of the best options is to use the lightest color in your countertop and get a tile in that. Maybe cream?

You can do a darker color just has to be a solid color.

Too busy for your countertop, choose something flat, or just paint, but for that decision you have to match the floor and the cabinets even the appliance.

You need to remove the short backsplash if you plan to use tile for a backsplash. The tile should be plain and simple, and it should match one of the lightest colors in your Formica counter. The backsplash should go from the counter to the cabinets above. If you think you may want to change the counter in the next few years, just use washable enamel paint above the short backsplash for now, because if you change the counter, the backsplash will have to be removed and you will have wasted your money.

The Linear mosaic stone and glass marble wall is a beautiful selection. That would be our choice, good luck with your project!
