Which worm casting method is preferable?

So, I want to add worm castings to my soil for both my violets and my other plants. My soil has always been OK, and frankly I've obsessed over its consistency, but I think they could use more organic material. (If I had the time, I would LOVE to have a worm box... Idk, I like worms.)

Anyhow, as for violets, which is better: Keeping the castings within the top layer, or mixing into all of the soil?

I was on here the other night, and Irina said she mixes in 1 cup per 5 gallons of soil for her violets. However, other guides say putting some in the top layer is good, but those guides aren't specifically for violets, and I want to be sure I won't burn them.

Thanks!
