Tape together some newspapers in common rug sizes, see what works. Add large artwork on the facing wall with a lamp and a table under it. Add a chair next to it.

As you open your door, on that right hand side wall -- how much space you you have with the door open? If there's room, I think I'd put a console table on that wall with a mirror above it. On the wall opposite the front door, I'd be tempted to put a really big piece of (vertical) art and two square tufted ottomans, side by side. I'd wait until you have your furniture to decide on a rug - but I think a rectangular shape would work in this space.

I agree that a 6 or 7' square rug would be nice a good size for your foyer. If you live in an area with 4 seasons, I would look for indoor/outdoor for easy upkeep. I think I would put a small bench to the left of the door to sit down and take off shoes or set down a purse while hanging up my coat. The back wall, directly opposite the door, would be the perfect place for a closed console with a lamp and lovely piece of art over it. What's your budget for furniture? How long is the back wall directly opposite the door? What colors do you plan on using throughout the house for accent colors?

Asha-Maía Design Concepts I've been thinking about placing a table in the center, im just afraid there won't be much room. I love the chairs you selected. I love everything you recommended, I'm just afraid of overcrowding the area. I guess I wouldn't know until I tried.

As for the rug, where do I lay it ? directly next to the door- vertical or horizontal ?

I forgot to ask in my original post, what about a light fixture. The ceiling isn't very high so I'm afraid we can't do a chandelier. I've been looking into some semi-flush.

coopermcboo when the front door is open it completely covers that small closet door. I would say it takes away 3-4 feet of wall space when the door is open on the 10'10 wall.

I like apple pie order's ideas. On the wall adjacent the front door, you could put a narrow bench with a mirror above it. It is nice to be able to check yourself before stepping out or opening the door for guest. I put a very large rug in our entry way, it takes up almost the entire space. It is mostly to protect the floors but I loved the rug so I took a chance. Some people might think it looks odd, but it works for us.

Did you use an indoor/outdoor rug?

As soon as that door is opened guests should be hit with a beautiful table and mirror or artwork.....thus, I'd put a beautiful console and mirror or artwork on that wall right across from the front door.

What glares at me is the door and sidelites. I see such a confusion in style in comparison to the wonderful trim work and lovely viewable areas. It would be easier to decorate if the anomaly, that being the door, was fixed. This can be done with a faux paint or a new door - a door with a glass portion would make the area less gloomy.

From there, a square rug, laid in the diamond from door to hall, topped with a square chandelier and a small round table.

Could the hall's ceiling light introduce color of the fireplace?

You probably want excellent lighting there - stairs, etc. so not right is this....?

I like the way the 5 x 8 fills the space best..I still think you need to try a true square centered.

Go big!

Veronica - Usually we all enter our homes through a garage or a side/rear door. Subsequently, 90% of the time the only time you visit the entry is to collect the mail, dust, and vacuum. That leaves this room as a guest entry or a crack of an opening for the door to door salesmen or pizza delivery dude. As such you get to dress it up. Go large ..center the rug to the room. Then have an additional mat to protect the floor at the door area if the weather is bad. Who wants to clean the good rug anyway :)

lucidos You are right. This isn't our primary entrance, so I would like to make it "grand" and more so for looks. I have been looking around at some rugs with primarily darker tones, like navy, to avoid the dirt and debris being shown. I like your idea of placing the rug further from the door and when necessary, add the smaller matt.

I took an old area rug I had and laid it to 5x8 horizontally. Let me see if I can configure it to look like the photos you have shown me

Just be sure to have a good sized rug on the outside of the door for wiping feet in any case.

Life is a cacophony of opinions. If it were me I would go smaller by a bit maybe 6 x 6 if that is a true parquet floor let it be part of the picture.
