Help New Construction Windows ..Poor Quality

Hello, I am building a new home. I have received the windows that I ordered for the house (which is still under construction) and my builder has the windows in. However, the windows are very poor quality and Im fed up with trying to get stuffed replaced. Can I return these windows and get a refund and just purchase new ones. We are about 4 weeks away from finishing the house and I KNOW I am going to have problems with the windows from the get go and the manufcturer's customer service is non-existent.

Impossible to tell without a hell of a lot more info. What type build? Do you own it or a development/builders home? What type windows? 4 weeks away fromfinish is awful tight to get new windows period. If this is a developer and you buy the house/land upon completion you are pretty much, stuck I am afraid. Did you not see these either on display or installed on another house. What are the issues exactly? Pictures?

The house will be finished 4 weeks after the windows go in? Impressive!

    What make/model on those windows?

Millworkman, thanks for the reply. Not a developers project. Im too good a money manager to give anyone carte blanche with my finances. One carpenter building a fabulous 1000 sf retirement home for me, paying him a weekly salary. The display windows were better quality than what I have. The windows were installed 2-3 months ago. We gave the supplier time to work with manufacturer to replace a bowed kitchen window, to clean up gunk off of the windows, to repair some broken pieces on the windows and most importantly to take back ALL of the window screens which were total cheap crap that did not even fit the windows. I wanted aluminum mesh, not fiberglass because grasshoppers will eat the fiberglass in no time. So the corrections were reported in May. This past week the NEW screens finally got here. They were labeled aluminum mesh but they were the EXACT same cheap fiberglass crap I already had. They did not send the new kitchen window. I asked to see how much I paid for the screens and they told me the total for all 14 was$30.50! Wow! So, we are only 4 weeks out from being completed. Based on their crappy customer service with the manufacturer Im pretty sure they will not stand behind their produ:t. So I want all windows out, a refund, then go buy 13 more windows with quality in mind and proper screens. What are my odds of making this happen. Builder is honest, ethical and hasnt missed 1 day of work since he started in April. It the manufacturer that sucks.

Btw, I own the 7 acres free and clear and Im paying cash for the construction. These are all vibyl, single hung, standard windows for new construction.

Never heard of vibyl windows. If you mean vinyl what brand are they? Like mill workman said, we need more info. What does your specs call for?

There are some industry standard truths here. Custom orders are non refundable. Installation constitutes acceptance.

You ordered them, accepted them, and had them installed.

Buyer's remorse for poor choice of design and specification strikes again.

If the manufacturer's ''warranty'' is unenforceable, then it is up to you to select better quality and pay for those to be ordered and installed.

If the exterior siding is installed, your choices of new windows has been reduced to replacement windows, as new construction windows are installed before the siding.

That creates another set of circumstances for problems. Sizes may require custom sizes. Insulating replacement windows is much more involved. Correct installation is different.

Live with the situation for now, research replacement window companies(the one price for all size window companies should NOT be included) and educate yourself(via You Tube videos---like twenty or more to determine good practices from lesser methods) on replacement windows and installation.

What is leading you to believe that the windows are of "very poor quality"?

What lead you to purchase windows from this manufacturing?

Ask the person you bought the window from, "Can I return these windows and get a refund and just purchase new ones?"

"I'm fed up with trying to get stuffed replaced." Is this a common occurrence with this project?

Why did your builder install windows of "very poor quality"?

Unfortunately, the supplier and the builder recommended them. Builder is doing a great job, no other issues thus far except these windows. Unfortunately, the siding is already up. I have already shopped the windows and can find the same sizes at Home Depot, Lowes and Menards, no custom sizes. We did not accept the screens and never were happy but we are not getting a solution from the supplier nor the manufacturer. The kitchen window that we did not accept (and asked for replacement) have never been shipped yet. (We have been waiting since May) "Sophie Wheeler" What specifications are you talking about?

As suggested by previous posters, removing installed windows--very likely flanged types--and replacing them with new units, will be much more costly than living with the unspecified "very poor quality" windows you ordered. You'll be lucky to get half their cost selling them on Kijiji etc.

Ill be dealing with this this week so Ill post how it goes. I dont feel that the windows are poor quality as much as the manufacturer/supplier are simply NOT fixing the reported damaged products that were shipped to us. We have waited 2 months, no corrections yet. Since this is how customer service functions for this window brand, I dont expect ANY support once the house is finished. Im fairly certain that my builder will do whatever it takes to make it right but its not his fault, its the supplier. Ill report back and let ya know how this goes down. Seems this country is nothing more than crooks, preying on their customers.

I see what youre saying Sophie but the buildr DID go to the plant to see how these windows were built. He did his homework but that did not ensure that the products sent would be perfect and there were many issues. Issues were reported and supplier guaranteed a fix and replacements AFTER reps from the supplier AND the manufacturer came out and concurred, there were problems. BUT, NOW, 2 months waiting, we havent been sent the new windows, the new window screens, etc. We just get lip service. Im tired of lip service. I want these windows out and purchase new windows. Im having a hard time undrstanding WHY in this COUNTRY its becoming accepted protocol to pay for something, then get damaged goods, but the purchaser pays the price. How did we get to this point in consumerism?

S MacDonald & Barb Lindsey are the same people I assume? Now your story had changed somewhat to you received damaged windows. Which is it damaged, defective (not damaged just poor quality) or you do not like the customer service? They all get basically treated differently. If these are installed (and you state they have been), then pretty much that means you have accepted them (or someone on your behalf has). Installed windows cannot be returned to anyone I have ever heard of. Something doesn't sound correct though, have you contacted the manufacturer yourself? What exactly is wrong with the windows to make them be damaged or or defective? What brand? What has or has not been done to remedy the situation?

No architect, obviously. Builder Spec'd cheap windows for a cheap price point target build. And that's what you get. Cheap Vinyl single hung. SMH. Now he's just trying to get through a build where ms.vaguely.dissatisfied with buyer's remorse doesn't understand that good windows start at 5x what was specified. You want better windows? They are certainly available. They won't be -$100.

When it comes to building materials (and other items), I try to get the opinion on the quality of the product from someone other than the person(s) trying to sell me the product.

Will the real S MacDonald please stand up.

Is there a reason this forum has so many weird personalities. I changed my user name because I dont like to have my personal info on the net. Nothing sneaky or sinister. I think Ill use a more professional forum. But thank you for the good advice from experienced people with leople skills.

If I took the time to list the issues it would take forever on a text format. The items were damaged because what was shipped was poor quality. Why is this becoming a pissing contest? Im seeking advice on standard protocol when a supplier is not making good on their promise to send nondefective merchandise. Is this a situation where we can end the purchase, send windows back and get a refund? Thats all. I didnt come here to fight bullies and snide comments...... weird.

I can see why none of you are working and have time to harass people on a forum. America is so dumbed down. You can see it in the adolescent comments here.

The simple solution is the builder inspects for damage prior to installation. If he installed them knowing they were damaged, I have a hard time blaming the manufacturer.

    Barb,

Amid the snark, I do think you have received your answer about whether it is standard practice to get a refund after the windows have been installed. I'd add that if the manufacturer is not responsive to your requests for repairs, new items, I highly doubt they will refund your money. The only real answer here is that you have to continue to deal with the supplier as best you can.

You came onto this forum and your story kept changing. When everyone tried to figure out what the problem was, and asked pertinent questions, you didn't answer them but complained some more. When asked what window brand you never responded. I think the people here were actually quite nice considering.

    And then you wrote this?

I can see why none of you are working and have time to harass people on a forum. America is so dumbed down. You can see it in the adolescent comments here.

Maybe if you worded YOUR question in such a way that it made sense, we would have had an easier time helping you.

You said "America is so dumbed down" and "you can see it in the adolescent comments here"

Maybe you're the one who needs to look in the mirror.

    Omg.

    WHAT BRAND OF WINDOWS!

The most basic, elementary questions never get answered and then the OP flounces off in a huff. Welcome to the internet!

    To whom it may concern,

I may be dumbed down, but I will repeat my good advice:

Ask the person you bought the window from, "Can I return these windows and get a refund and just purchase new ones?"

Sophie Wheeler has good input too.

I am sorry you are dealing with this at a very stressful time. I've had hard time following your exact concern and trying to assign "blame" between lack of a specification / incorrect windows delivered vs what was ordered based on the display / overall quality issue / screen issue / damaged kitchen window, etc.

Re: screens - from a prior build - I found that my builder provided 3rd party screens that were crappy. It may be customary that, if not 100% specified, you'll get these no name screens. The were "okay", but they too were black mesh and not attractive (and thus stored in my basement for the past 20 years!)

YOU may have a clear understanding of what you perceive the issues to be, but we do not. I believe that's why you have had such variable feedback.

Until there's clarity there - you are never going to get resolution from the parties involved OR good advice here.
