Maybe put two chairs and an ottoman where the sofa is, and turn the desk around so it faces the seating area. I would fill some of the shelves of the built-in with books.

Oh, and maybe consider new window treatments like roman shades.

An office where one meets with clients should have the desk turned so its occupant can see whoever enters, but a private office does not require this. As this is part of your bedroom the office is definitely private. I do agree with Kim that you should use chairs rather than a couch or loveseat. Chairs allow much more fluid design in a small space. Open up the space by using smaller but comfortable occasional chairs and limiting the number to no more than three.

I would replace the heavy drapes with two more roman shades. Two chairs and an ottoman as suggested with a small table and lamp between them. Are you in the middle of organizing and decluttering?

Yes, yes and YES! Thanks everyone! I love the suggestions, now just finding the chairs accent pieces. The office is just for my husband to do accounting alone. No one else using our bedroom/study. In the bookcase area I do have a sewing/embroidery machine that I utilize bi-monthly.

Glad you like that one, Fran. I found it on Etsy, but it is called a faux roman shade. Not sure exactly what that means, but I found the fabric on another site if you want to have something made locally.

A faux roman shade isn't operational. It stays up all the time. If you need privacy or light control, you would need to add a blind as shown in the picture.
