PLEASE HELP MY ROSES!

last modified: 9 years ago

So two springs ago was a disaster for our roses. We had a warm Feb-March followed by an incredibly cold April, which inevitably killed off our roses after they started coming up early. Last year I noticed a small green stem coming up from the ground so I thought I'd wait it out and see what happened. This year we had a few more stems (red leaves and stems which signals diseased) and inevitably got some blooms! But now I have a huge problem...

The stems are very long with no leave growth until the top... I have 2 long stems and nothing to prune from because the plant is so thin. What do I do? I don't know what I'm doing here, these were our first roses, and I'll love to save them if it's not too late! You can see the dead stems from a few years ago there's not much to work with here please help
