I am a fan of using Vinegar because its great for many household uses ( at different dilution rates):

degreasing... deodorizing (excellent for getting rid of burned food odors in kitchen or microwave)... cleaning windows and mirrors... clean stove top and counter tops (that are not natural stone)... soak a clogged shower head to remove mineral deposits... etc etc

the vinegar smell dissipates soon enough and areas are left smelling clean and are clean...

Vinegar replaces a bunch of bottled chemicals.

Deodorize laundry and replaces adding softener.

Make German potato salad.

I go through a couple of gallons a year, at least. Washing the wood kitchen floor being the largest use. De-liming the toilets the next. I don't have especially hard water but still seem to need to do it if I want to get them clean.

Especially the cat's toilet. I have not taught her to flush yet. She only weighs 8 pounds, I don't think she'll ever be able to.

So clean your freekin coffee pot, Ken. ( It does make a difference if you have hard water)

Would that be cider vinegar, or white wine vinegar, or balsamic vinegar, or red wine vinegar, or a mirriad of flavored vinegars??? I bought a $75 , 6 oz. bottle of aged balsamic vinegar from an Italian website and it is so wonderfully sweet and thick as 10 weight motor oil it can be dripped on ice cream! Sweet. NOT gonna use that on slugs!

I'm very confused.....there must be a connection between the price of vinegar and hostas, Ken. Or are you among friends and just throwing the question out to see what comes flying back?

Marie- Vinegar is used (so is ammonia) for killing slugs on hostas. Ken was simply alerting some folks as to a cheap alternative. I like Sluggo. Ken is used to stuff flying back. :-)

there we go ... my point was.. its pickling season .. and 55 gallon drums are on sale ... who can buy 10 gallons of properly diluted slug killer for 2 dollars and 35 cents????

i mean really ... the gal was 30 cents cheaper than the half gallon ... crikey ... thats 30 cents i still have ...lol ...

10 per cent vinegar diluted in water.. and put in a pump tank.. is a great contact slug killer ...

It doesn't burn leaves? As a "contact" slug killer... do you have to see the slugs and hit 'em with it? Or use it like the 10% ammonia and spray the whole area?

Ammonia is cheap, too (and I use that).

Not trying to be obtuse... just never heard of using vinegar before....

~wooshhh!~ that was the sound of the purpose of this thread going over my head when I first posted ... I thought Ken really needed tips for what to do with the vinegar. LOL :)

Thank you, Ken_Adrian for pointing out that it's a great time to buy vinegar in large quantities to dilute and use to kill the slugs. ... The slugs around my yard seem to play hide and seek though. I see the damages but all I find are a few of those buggers.

Now I understand even more! It's about vinegar being cheap during canning season. It's all the ........'s Ken uses. My brain skips........synapses collapse

Get it at Costco and it is cheaper yet for two gallons

How often do you do this, Ken? I don't have a pump tank but it seems like a good thing to have.
