Plank Ceilings anyone??

Probably a slim chance, but does anyone have a plank ceiling that has a smoke alarm on it? I want to do it inside our tray ceiling, but I feel like the smoke alarm would be an eyesore.

chiflipper, that is NOT good advice. Hardwired smoke detectors typically are interconnected so if one goes off, they all go off (which is an important safety feature in a large house, in particular), they don't fail because their batteries failed (how many reports have you seen where the house had detectors but they weren't working...because the batteries had died?) The hard-wired ones are typically required in new construction/renovations in many jurisdictions by building code, and for good reason. And finally, you must NOT paint or stain the exterior of the alarm - says so right on the alarm/packaging - it will invalidate the certification. Is this space a bedroom? You could do a white T&G ceiling, and your white smoke detector will be visible, but I guarantee people won't be looking at it with the added millwork.

BeverlyFLADeziner I was just trying to show the tray ceiling and the smoke alarm in one shot. There are no upgrades in this... it's just a standard ceiling to show placement of the smoke alarm.

KBG Design yes it is a bedroom. I was thinking white would be the obvious way to go so the alarm doesn't stand out. I was hoping for a bit more of an accent, like natural wood, but that would just draw more attention to the alarm I'm afraid...

I agree and that makes sense. What if you purchased and installed a more unique ceiling fan or chandelier to be more of a focal point in? Then the T & G would be more of a beautiful backdrop to a more decorative element.

What if you relocate the smoke alarm?

Just buy a wall-mounted battery-operated detector. Be sure to "wire nut" the exposed ends when you remove the ceiling mount. OR you can paint or stain the exterior casing of the detector.
