Yes, if you want to update the look, paint the trim white. You also may want to paint the stair spindles white as well.

Here is a good example of white trim and white spindles with lots of oak too.

Stairs and railings look great with white balusters (spindles) and black railings and newel posts. Newel posts are the end posts. I will post some examples. White trim would be great. Bbl

With your white doors your trim in white would be a very nice update.

Paint it!!! We bought a 1988 home with oak trim and painted it all! Love it! We originally hired a painter who sprayed a primer and 2 coats and it wasn't nearly enough! We considered it all a primer and got out our paintbrushes! It took another 2 (sometimes 3) coats to cover the grain but well worth it! We painted our spindles (actually my 18 year old daughter did) and I want to paint the trim on the stairs and the risers but with 4 kids sometimes the projects have to wait! And we gutted the kitchen and all baths so we've had projects galore! I've attached a couple pics, we painted the mantle too...sorry I don't have the before pics except for the before and after of our new interior doors. Go for it!
