Using a day bed as a sofa...

A while back, someone here posted a pic of a narrow room with a daybed....I believe it was a sort of bohemian/eclectic room, and it stuck with me because it looked so cozy. (I think there was a weird light fixture, though. Ring any bells? It might have been Chijim.) I thought I saved the picture but guess I didn't.

We have a sunroom/den in our beach house that is mainly used by me. It's where I read when it's too cold for the porch! We have a sofa here now (which is a sleeper) and we are thinking about moving that up to our guest room. I would love to create a cozy reading spot here with a daybed and lots of pillows.

Do you have a daybed in a living space? Any drawbacks? Any sources? I may have to order online since I don't love the offerings at the few stores that are near the house.

Thanks!

My neighbor/friend has one in her bonus room, which is where we chit chat and have some wine or coffee. It's not very comfortable to sit on, given the height and depth. I usually scoot back and sit "criss cross applesauce."

I used to have one in our #2 guest room/sewing room, but it didn't get much use. Guests don't really spend that much time in their rooms.

I have a day bed in my guest room. It is NOT suitable for sitting! It has lots of pillows and cylindrical bolsters on the ends, but it's still far too tall and deep to sit on like a couch, and the pillows don't support enough to sit sideways with my feet up on the bed.

I've just started thinking about replacing it with a sleeper sofa, which is what we had before the day bed. Wanna trade? :)

I had one in my office and second msmeow. I slept on it and it was a good landing spot for stuff. It was never comfortable to sit on because you could only sit with your legs straight out in front of you.

Having tried one at a friend's home years ago, I agree with the above - too deep and tall and not comfy at all.

I don't know why, but my $125 Made for Hitchcock leather sofa from Craigslist has been named the Magic Sofa, as I can fall asleep on it very quickly even with a dog or two joining me. It's also very comfy for sitting - once of the most comfy I have ever sat on. The day bed sounds good and romantic, but IRL, it may not be. My baby, from the seller's ad -

We had a daybed with a trundle in a guest room and I gave it away because it was uncomfortable and a PITA to make up. Consider a smaller scale sofa or maybe moving the sofa to the long wall. Would that work?

Sueb, was it dyhgarden's sunroom with the daybed that you are thinking of?

I have a daybed in the MIL/guest bedroom..with a trundle as to give the most versatile sleeping arrangement in case of friends visiting..a couple? a mom with a kid? two kids? can be done,

The style of the bed is not my cup of tea (it's a traditional bulkier looking thing from Ballard Designs, bought on Craigslist), and it's a bit too high because of that trundle, but it is extremely versatile and comfortable to sleep(checked it myself several times). Actually it begs one to sleep lol.

I have several pillows on it since it doesn't have back.

As I'm a person who reads almost exclusively in beds, I'd be able to lounge there very easily..I never sit straight anyway unless the situation requires so. I'm always at some sort of the Lotus pose anyway.

Others might find it uncomfortable because of the height.

But I definitely aimed at creating a room that would look more than just a bedroom.

It does have a secretaire with a small chair/ottoman so one can sit there if one wishes to write etc.

On the other hand my DS's daybed(bought from West Elm in 2015 I think...fortunately for the third of the price since these guys are a rip off if you ask me) is a normal height, does have upholsterd back and sides, and looks like a sofa. The main difference-it holds a normal mattress.

But it looks like a sofa, and one can sit there..probably more lounge since it's a tad deeper than sitting sofas but many sofas come deeper because they suggest lounging rather than sitting staight.

I believe one can find one tailored to his needs.

and the more budget one has the better it will look like too.

As I was interested in this I did an extensive research..for 3K you can have a nice looking and probably decently made sleeper sofa, that will fold, unfold, etc, will have pleasing lines(at least to me) etc. The one I loved the most though was 5 grand..))

I was unwilling to spend that money.

But if I knew I'd be putting it in a living space I might reconsider my approach.

After all all my childhood we didn't use beds as in beds..they were all sofas that could be used as beds. Or beds that looked like sofas. I find it to be a very versatile solution for many rooms.

(We also have a sleeper sectional in the family room-it's not my favorite piece of furniture yet allows for two or even three more guests to be accommodated if needed

We watch TV on it, and I never sit there straight either. It depends on a person. Some people will always try to get themselves in some fetal position lol every time it's appropriate. My MIL is like that too.

If you find one with back cushions, you are more likely to be comfy sitting on it. This is just an idea of one. Daybed

What's your style? I prefer streamlined daybeds/sleepers, as in modern..but I did save some others when I was researching

here they can't seem to carry it anymore but maybe someone else does? it's by Lee Industries

    http://www.horchow.com/Lee-Industries-Burbank-Sleeper-Sofa-lee-industries/cprod107420016___/p.prod?icid=&searchType=MAIN&rte=%252Fsearch.jsp%253FN%253D0%2526Ntt%253Dlee%252Bindustries%2526_requestid%253D12614&eItemId=cprod107420016&cmCat=search

AllModern, Dot and Bo, Room and Board, Urban Outfitters-all used to have some..can't attest to quality as I've never tried them

these guys have a lot of more modern/contemporary looking options

    http://www.moderndigsfurniture.com/modern-sofa-beds.html

    Blue Dot one:

    http://www.yliving.com/bludot-diplomat-sleeper-sofa.html

and of course Design Within Reach..they're not within reach if you ask me but their products are well made. Usually

    http://www.dwr.com/living-sleepers?lang=en_US

Urban Outfitters has several cute ones that look like sofas-sofas..the reviews are usually so so..but they carry a lot of new ones that I hadn't read reviews on them yet. For the price I wouldn't expect any miracle though.

    https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/sofas

My favorite was Traversina sleeper in deep purple from DWR..unfortunately they don't carry it anymore. That was very modern, streamlined piece, with lots of flexibility..but it was definitely a sleeper sofa rather than daybed.

that's my trying to get my compromise daybed to work with the color of walls that was tweaked by DH until became unrecognizable lol

very hard to take decent pics since the room is small. it does have a very weird light fixture lol..still in the process of finding right crystals..

the art got all switched since then. whatever you see didn't stay except for a small ceramic sculpture(a possum mom with little possums. I thought she looks like me. lol) I'm not finished with it quite yet.

(btw id did come with two huge bolsters..I got rid of them a.k.a put them in the garage..too bulky)

on the other hand, my DS's daybed..the only pic I got. Normal height. He loves it. Feels very grown up to him. Sits on it, lies on it, sleeps on it. The upholstery is some velvet looking polyester I suppose. sides and back. It is comfy. But can be used by one person only at a time. So not something I'd put in the guest room where I need more options.

    Depends on one's needs.

Bonnie Ann, no, that wasn't it. It wasn't a room "owned" by a GW member; I think it was one of those rooms Chijim posts for people to comment on.

Moving the sofa to the long wall doesn't make sense because then your back is to the view (the beach).

There's nothing wrong per se with the sofa we have there now -- it's very comfy -- but I like the idea of really sprawling out, like on a bed, to read or watch a show on my iPad. (Yeah, I know, I could go upstairs and do that on my actual bed...) This really isn't a room where we sit and chat with guests or really even immediate family, because we bigger spaces elsewhere with more seating.

April, my style in this house (second home) is cottagey, beachy, a little retro, lots of flea market furniture.

I guess I need to probably find one in a store and sit on it myself to see how it feels.

These are variations of what I've got in my head:

This one just looks like it's a twin bed on a frame:

This is one I do NOT like. Too boxy and looks more like a bedroom piece IMO than some of the others.

so that's great then..lots of options on Craigslist or at least it should be

i like the second and the third pics the most..I'd look for something like a rattan one though..first very pretty indeed..second, I believe more comfy in terms of leaning against it with a pillow or something

one of the reasons I went with this not-to-my-taste bulky one in the guest room was it having upholstered arms

if it was room of my own-I'd never choose it. To be frank. I'm also into a bit flea market a bit retro but then again a bit into many things

But it had to be a comfiest bed it could be, because of it being a guest room and being used as a bed a lot.

That rattan is really really pretty, visually light..can work in most settings with most styles I believe

i'm pretty sure manufacturers carry smth like this rattan too..can't remember who now lol..Serena and Lily? need to check. but of course would cost much more then

    Was it Roarah?

yeah..Serena and Lily carry one but no back..Jayson Home does-out of stock (shape's different but also cool)..prices are crazy.

Vintage piece would have a lot of charm and (hopefully) be cheaper..

Iron is easier to score..whether second hand or new

I hope you get more specific and helpful suggestions, since my brain feels like it's fried for today..:)

There are also sources like Chairish where you can limit search to your own area..then try it in person. Problem there-first you pay then you pick up..I believe if you don't like it in person they give you money back though. But to me, complicates things a bit. One starts feeling uncomfortable, all that jazz.

bonnie ann what a pretty daybed!

it's a bit of pity though to pile it with back pillows..you loose a bit of that cool shape. Like, it's there of course, but you loose a bit of intent.

oh. i also like this one

    https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shop/indra-wooden-platform-daybed?category=sofas&color=020

the thing is: I bought very similar bed(not daybed, real bed) from them for my DD in that style(was cheaper since big sale etc)..platform and all..similar wood, similar construction. and I was worried about their quality, a lot.

yet this particular one proved to be really nice. so one can be hopeful in case of similar daybed too?

also..here you're in charge of the mattress. gives one (much needed) flexibility. brings more expense of course.

in terms of comfiness-I'm still rooting for that rattan though lol

We have this vintage rattan daybed on our screened porch at our lake cabin. If you place the pillows just right it is comfortable enough to sit for hours. When it's not too hot, the teens fight for the right to sleep on it when staying over. (I have taken many naps on it, Works just fine!)

I love your sunroom sue! I used the mattress from urban outfitters and it saved me tons and the quality is great! I too am impressed with their products,

oh you reminded me how we bought this totally amazing rattan set..completely refurbished..it was drought, right? and then it started raining. so it got wet. I was afraid of mold..pulled it out to the sun. didn't cover it-thought "one more day of sun..two more days"..

it's faded. one side..and the rattan itself-oh it needs to be at least under some umbrella

and the stupid remodel went on and on..

I just couldn't stand seeing this furniture getting more ruined

i put it on Craigslist..I got several emails immediately..I sold it within an hour to a lady who wanted to use it in her living room.

It was comfy, it was so so so comfy. And it wasn't even long pillow..3 on the bottom 3 on the back. plus armchair. plus ottoman. plus coffee table. plus side table..

the guy who reupholstered and refurbished it did amazing job. I felt so guilty. Well at least I saved this set -it went to somebody nice who really loved it.

That long lyrical rambling was to say that rattan can be very comfy indeed..:)

That one you said looks like a twin mattress is the Lettered Cottage blog - their old house. I think I remember that they built in a base/platform (whatever) into that nook. You should look on their blog. I LOVE that one shown right before the lettered cottage one.

Daybeds look terrific but just plain aren't comfortable for sitting and reading, no matter how many pillows are on them! I'd look for a very small loveseat - no more than about 50" wide. I have such on my sunporch and it's so comfortable.

I have a daybed in my sunroom as well as an outside daybed. And I just bought another outside daybed for the pool area (same one).

All three of mine are extremely comfortable for my purposes, which is laying on them with pillows or sitting upright fully with my feet tucked under me. I strongly prefer them to any of our couches for lounging.

None could be practical in any way as a traditional couch, though, nor would they really be comfortable for more than once person to sit on at a time. But for lounging and cozying up with dogs, they are wonderful.

Outside (This is the one I just bought a second one of, love it- it came with its mattress which has a Sunbrella cover)

This is the inside one. It's from Ballard Design. I bought a memory foam mattress and have multiple different fitted mattresses covers I change with the season (this chenille one is the fall cover, I have a light linen one for spring and summer)

Augment, that's it!! And ha, look at who wrote the first response to the OP. At the time, I was referring to my sunroom at home (even though our two houses are very different, somehow we have very similar sunrooms in both). I think I'm going to do it. If we decide we don't love it, it will be easy enough to put the sofa back (it's just going upstairs to the guest room -- which also has a regular bed) and move the daybed to the guest room.

Looking for one with a low profile because of the windows.

I really like the World Market one, esp the price.

Land of Nod, though I really didn't want gray...

Love this look, but wish it had a back.

I may may just go for the WM one. It's on sale for 300 and has great reviews.

Ohhh but then there's this one at Overstock....

I love the PB one, but would go with the WM option instead. The high back on overstock, makes it really hard to change the linens. The lack of a back on the PB model would be the easiest to change.

    Sueb20 thanked 1929Spanish-GW

Well, changing linens won't be that much of an issue, since it might get slept on maybe twice a year....but I do wonder if the back on the Overstock one is just too high.

I have now realized that the "day bed" in the inspiration pic isn't even a day bed after all! Just a regular twin bed. I still want a day bed.

This may be my late summer/early fall project. This house was reno'd 7 years ago and we just threw stuff in the room without much thought. Now my wheels are turning... of course I'll need a different (taller) table and a new rug and and funky floor lamp or wall sconce...and of course tons of pillows.

Sue, didn't Mtnrd get that World Market one for her beach house teen hang out, or am I remembering incorrectly? Or maybe she considered it?

    Either way, it is lovely!

    You guys are brilliant!

I have ordered it. Yay! I don't have a mattress yet, but I'm wondering where all you daybed owners get your mattress covers. The ones at WM seem to have mixed reviews, and....they're burlap?? Some others I've seen online seem much too thick for a regular mattress (like 16"). I suppose I could just try a fitted sheet, but I don't want it to look too bed-like, if you know what I mean. PS I do not sew!

Ballard and Etsy have some but they're mostly over $300!

I looked all over the web and these were super cheap and super nice!

I had a local seamstress make mine. I think she charged $100 the World Market ones are actually soft, I had two but they faded being outdoors.

I like that last Overstock metal bed posted. Maybe with a nice thick foam cushion rested up against the back would help make if feel more a couch for sitting. Then you can always removed it when someone actually uses it to sleep on. Off to check that out on Overstock :-)
